Music consumption, playback, portability, and component refinement have come a long way. It's easy to get lost and many times tough to compare\test\verify that one item clearly does a better job than another.
I'm like many others and always looking for small ways to up-level my music listening experience. Things do get to a point where most potential changes will be forklift-upgrades - replace one component with another and hope for the best. This could be amps, speakers, streamers, transports, interconnects...
In general I believe there is a point where good enough equals end game. The only time that isn't true is if I'm willing to substantially increase my investment in physical hardware.
Through the years I've always believed that the quality of the source recording, mix-down, mastering is where a lot of the magic came from.
- Great song - poor mastering -Great song
- Poor song - good mastering - Good recording
- Great song - great mastering - Favorite album
This isn't a hard & fast rule, but it does generally hold true for me. I thought the move to 24bit source files would have a lot to add, but I'm like many others and can only see the difference in a spectrogram vs hearing higher fidelity when compared to 16 bit CDs.
Not all recordings of the same song\album are created equal though. Original masters, remaster, reissues, and some are exclusive for some streaming services.
For me I found items below to be true:
- 16 vs 24 bit - sound the same if they're the same mastering
- Local vs online streaming - streaming has some EQ and mastering is often sounds compressed
- Original Mastering vs Remaster - dynamic range is lost with re-masters
- 16bit original >= 24bit version of the same song
- Original recording releases generally offer higher dynamic range
- I grew up playing original recordings and they have the punch & nuance I remember in my favorite songs
Nothing science based here - personal preference and A/B listening over time. The one bonus I appreciate is I can generally find different digital master options for reasonable cost vs different LP pressings...
