Marantz model 8
Hello everybody.
I imported a Marantz model 8b from Japan a couple years ago. I believe it’s referred to as a reissue.. the badge on the back side says it was made in California in 1962. When I bought it I had no idea there was such a thing and when it arrived I took it to a friend I consider to be a pretty brilliant electronic engineer and audio restoration pro who also has an 8b manufactured in New York. He was puzzled by the simple fact that it looked different (top mounted capacitors are different). He thought it might be a kit but changed his mind after looking at the underside and seeing the same high quality components that appear in the original 8b. He tested everything and said it was in excellent condition -we even AB’d against his 8b and agreed it sounded at least as good. My question is twofold: do these hold the same level of value as the New York manufactured models and is there any appreciable difference in quality of workmanship/components? I really love this thing and I’m quite proud of it -I guess that’s all that counts but it’d be nice to hear that my California made version is every bit as desireable as the east coast model
Thanks, guys. I’ve actually been getting ready to send it to my current tech in San Jose. I’ve been procrastinating because I hate being without it but I obviously it should get a checkup. FWIW, my friend who provided the initial assessment on it did say the top mounted capacitors were still functional but not great and that they should be replaced in the not too distant future. I’ll call my technician and make an appointment for it! |
@ccogopher Make that service sooner rather than later. You really don't want to find out what happens when the power transformer burns up. This is something that can happen to any amplifier that old with original filter capacitors in the power supply! Since they are that old, its a guarantee that you're really not hearing the amp at its best. If you like this amp, get this done right away; don't use it until this is done- replacement power transformers are rare and expensive. |
