Integrated Headphone amp with moving coil phono stage
What you are describing is a preamplifier.  My Quad 33 (2024 edition) has MM/MC phono, balance control, a low impedance high output headphone amp and as a bonus, excellent tone controls.  It is also compact in size and quite reasonable in price.  ...
To Banana or to BFA?
I use BFAs and like them.  Contrary to 996, it’s most bananas that cannot be rescued from fatigue of their spring elements.  With BFAs, if they begin to collapse you can easily restore them with a well chosen tool.  Of course the quality matters…N...
Phono Amp Spec’s
I agree with the other @retiredaudioguy…your preamp jumps from 40 to 64 dB while your cartridge’ sweet spot is in the middle. I have used Pro-Ject PhonoBox DS3B and it has a 55 dB setting. They make a TubeBox version as well.
I’m lost. Help me find my way
Grado phones can seem too bright for some listeners.  Also check out Sennheiser HD660S2  and Audeze LCD2 Classic in that $$$ range.  If a higher price is within reach, Focal Clear MG are incredibly comfortable and as their name implies.
Thorens 160MKII BC Grace 707 + F9????
The 707 and F9E or F9R are contemporary stablemates from Grace, fully compatible. SS makes styli for all versions. The Ruby is TOTL, and by many considered one of the top members of the MM pantheon, along with Shure V15, Stanton/Pickering and ADC ...
Thoughts and suggestions please
If you have a Node N130 or Icon, I would NOT go into a Vault 2i, but why do you need more than an SSD NAS to host your local files?  Even a USB backup drive can plug directly into one of those Nodes.
Optimized Center Channel
I would try borrowing a 3-way center channel from Paradigm, model 70C.  This is a size that should fit where your Kanta Center is now, without necessitating any rearranging of components.  Dial in tonal profile using your AVP’s PEQ that smooths an...
??? Where Does "High End" Start ???
High End Audio was invented by specific people. Mark Levinson, Bill Z. Johnson, and David Wilson are key names. The former makers of luxury audio, Gordon Gow and Saul Marantz, Bud Fried, Jim Lansing as examples…all practiced economy to an extent…n...
Walk-in soundstage
Walk-in soundstage?  Easy…with nitrous oxide!
antiskate disc
Clearly the XA bearings were primitive in terms of machining and design, especially the cockamamie vertical needlepoints with the silicone oil damping contraption. Later models like the 77XB I have used a simpler one piece part. I run an AT-71 on ...
20 Vintage Amps That Prove They Really Don’t Make Them Like They Used To
I kept waiting for Ampzilla, but she never showed up!
antiskate disc
I read AR XA inventor Edgar Villchur’s “Understanding High Fidelity” as a young man, and his position was that antiskate correction was unnecessary because it’s not the skating force you care about, it’s the groove damage caused by mistracking tha...
Bi-amping McIntosh MC2120 and MC2125 with Klipsch RP-5
I’m with Glennewdick on this.  You inherited Dad’s amp, and you want to incorporate it into your already well equipped system…very understandable…but your system simply doesn’t need it. Put the 2120 on a shelf in a place of honor, or develop a sec...
DIY Speaker Kits, a good idea?
I have gone this route and built what I think are pretty darn good speakers using Dayton Audio and Morel components, and a professionally designed crossover, but now I want something new and they are nearly impossible to sell, even for a fraction ...
