Put my old Crown Xs500 amp in my main system. Holy cow!

I have this Crown amp that was used for parties with a Yamaha mixer and JBL speakers.  I never thought of this gear as audiophile quality.  Just as a fluke I inserted the Crown amp into my main system consisting of a Musetec D005 DAC, Raven tubed preamp (the new Don Sachs pre from Spatial Audio), and Verity Audio Parsifal Encores.  Cabling is all XLR 5.3 Speltz anti cables.  I guess I expected a bright sound, somewhat harsh, 2D soundstage, and bass without grunt.  Much to my surprise the sound was clear, detailed, very revealing, not harsh, and bass was exceptional, The soundstage was quite good with better focused images and I found myself playing a lot of my favorite music that I was most familiar with and I continued to be amazed.  Vocals were more intelligible and there was better presence of performers; like they were in the room.  The only negative: very distracting fan noise from the Crown.  I ordered better cooling fans that use ball bearings and should be much quieter and plan to replace the fans later this week.  I'm not sure I will keep the Crown in my system or shop for a more revealing amp than what I was using but for now I am having a lot of fun!

Fun reading your thread, Mike. Thanks for pointing it out. So I'm not the only one. "There are others"  LOL

@ditusa have you compared any of the Schiit amps with Crown? I was toying with the idea of a Wotan but not sure how much better it would be compared to the Xs500.  Might buy one anyway since they have a fair return policy.

No. The Schiit Tyr mono amps have peaked my interest. I prefer mono amps and very short speaker cables.
