Is ripping from a laptop as good as a desktop?

no difference if the CD is perfect. If the CD is imperfect a poorer drive will have a harder time of error correction for imperfections.The licensed version of dbPoweramp allows multi CPU support for ripping which may make the better processor machine faster on rips.

Who is to say which machine would have the "poorer" drive, the laptop or the desktop? I have a couple Thinkpads that have very nice cd drives that I have used with Exact Audio Copy to make very nice rips.

As 123Go indicated, this doesn't distinguish between either desktop or laptop. And even with an imperfect CD, features such as Exact Audio Copy and AccurateRip within DBPoweramp compares your result to exact versions contained within online databases, and thus ensures transcription accuracy.
