Absolute top tier DAC for standard res Redbook CD

Hi All.

Putting together a reference level system.
My Source is predominantly standard 16/44 played from a MacMini using iTunes and Amarra. Some of my music is purchased from iTunes and the rest is ripped from standard CD's.
For my tastes in music, my high def catalogues are still limited; so Redbook 16/44 will be my primary source for quite some time.

I'm not spending DCS or MSB money. But $15-20k retail is not out of the question.

Upsampling vs non-upsampling?
USB input vs SPDIF?

All opinions welcome.

And I know I need to hear them, but getting these ultra $$$ DAC's into your house for an audition ain't easy.

Looking for musical, emotional, engaging, accurate , with great dimension. Not looking for analytical and sterile.

Matt, I just spoke to John at Audio Connection for you and he would love to help. He has a few, but he will know what will sound best with what you are using in your system. he's great like that, just ask anyone who goes there. His number is (973) 239-1799. Just tell him Peter told you to call or that you are from the board. Great luck. I can't wait to hear what you two come up with.
Has anyone have the opportunity to compare any of the aforementioned units to Benchmark DAC1 or one of its various spin-offs? I have it hooked up now and it really changed my redbook CD listening experience in a profound way. But I am wondering if there is something even beyond this. Thanks! --Jonson Lee
Jonson, you really need to get in to listen to the Ayre and Aesthetix. I have listened to the Benchmark 2 vs these other two and there isn't a comparison. The A's are both musical, detailed not etched, non 'digital'. They sound like music. I have heard so many DAC's recently and I went with the Music Hall 25.3 as it has balanced outputs and I use Ayre electronics. I couldn't justify spending more as the MH was very musical with plenty of detail etc... vs most of the DAC's under 3k. I have heard some of the higher end DAC's now and I still love the Ayre, but it only has USB and I need more than just that. I'd die for the Aesthetix gear. Of all the electronics I've heard recently and that includes most top names as I am redoing my system, they are the top two. I like them better than the AR ref stuff too. There is just something about them both that say music and built like a nice looking tank all at the same time, lol. I told John that you would probably be in touch. He said he's excited to speak with you to see what you are looking to do. He knows what goes best together as anyone on here who has worked with him will tell you. Let us know what you get in touch with him. Great luck.
