BelCanto DACs vs transport/IC quality

I've seen several threads here generally asking about how much difference a good transport makes, but I'll ask my specific question. BelCanto suggests their upsampling and jitter reclocking makes transport quality far less an issue.

What have BelCanto DAC 1/1.1/2 owners found when upgrading their transport from a generic CD player to a good quality transport (say <$1K used)? Or even sensitivity to digital interconnect upgrades?

My DAC2 is driven by a 1990 Philips CD60 ($400 MSRP) which is a well-designed cdp for the price and era, and uses their base CDM4 transport. IC is Digiflex Canare. Downstream equipment is generously revealing.

While I'm sure all answers will have to be subjective, the consensus may be 'put the CD transport $$ into a newer multi-format transport/player'. I don't own the alternate formats nor can the BelCanto decode them, but if it sounds better than the Philips, the same as a high-end CD transport, and offers more flexibility, why not? Any suggestions on a great-sounding DVD player-as-CD-transport that I can 'borrow' from a Best Buy or Circuit City to see if differences can be heard?

I DID compare a $200 JVC DVD player as a transport, it sounded slightly poorer than my cdp. And I recently compared a $500 NAD cdp vs a $3800 Krell cdp as transports driving a BC DAC1 in a showroom and heard vanishingly little difference. It would seem I've answered my own question, but neither is a SFT1 or SST1 overbuilt transport.

When I owned a Bel Canto DAC 1.1 I upgraded from a Musical Fidelity E60 CDP to a Theta Pearl transport. I didn't notice much difference, but I think that was because the Bel Canto was still breaking in.

The SF SFT-1 was a strong candidate when I was considering a transport, but I opted for the Pearl because it was quite a bit cheaper.

I was able to get varying results with three different digital cables with the Pearl/DAC1.1 combo.

When I owned the DAC 1.1, it was noted at the Bel Canto website that they preferred using a DVD player with true 24/96 output as a transport. However, with the DAC 2 I don't know what their recommendation is.

I have a bc 1.0. I also have a cal audio alpha 24/96, and until recently a sigma II. I can tell a cheap transport from a top shelf transport with the cal's very easily. With the bc I it is very very close. There must be some reclocking mechanism in place. In fact I've never heard a dac that is so insensitive to it's input transport.

Cheap transports include my ancient denon 1520 (it JUST WON'T DIE!!!), a modern day phillips cdr 880, and a sony dvd-7700. Reference transport is a hotrodded scd-1 with all available audiocom mods.

Relevant...? OK, I use a Perpetual P1A to reclock in front of my (modwrightted P3A) DAC. Perpetual says this should make differences in transport and digital cable a "refinement" rather than a major factor; so this observation should be comparable...or even relevant 8-).

The transport upgrade I did, from well-modded CD player (JVC 1010, highly praised in old Abso!ute Sound) to Pioneer DVD player modded specifically as a transport by EVS, showed a Major improvement in stage width, and tighter yet deeper bass. This in spite of Perpetual's statement that the transport should make little difference. Also in spite of the fact that the modded JVC was a darn good CD player.

Additionally, for what it's worth, I found the difference between digital cables (Elco S/PDIF Ultimate, up from Monster whatchamacallit) easily audible but hard to describe, in terms of, errr, uhhh, "roundness", I guess...?.

If it were me I'd start by trying different digital cables. Maybe something from Acoustic Zen, HMS, or Zcable to start. Given the DAC2 reclocks the signal I'd bet you'll get a much bigger bang for your buck doing that, at least initially. I've found digital cables can make a fairly big difference(i.e. not like where you have to sit and convince yourself you hear something different), not that I understand why of course. Best of luck.
