Inexpensive AV Processor with bypass
millercarbon follows this forum just to post opinions to kill multi-channel audio. As to your question, Atmos is encoded into normal Dolby True HD. This is only done through bluray players and it is fully backwards compatible to normal True HD. Pro...
best budget amp/preamp for B&W 805 D3s
It's not going to be possible to get a good integrated or a preamp/amp combo for $1k that will satisfy your needs.  If you really want something now, TMR Audio (on audiogon) has a used Classe Sigma Amp2 for $1084.  Then just use the pre-outs on yo...
Is there a difference in sound between a coax cable and an optical one?
It's not the RCA cable that's a problem.  It's the RCA jack on the DAC.  On many RCA jacks inside, there is a pressure plate which the pin/tip of the RCA plug touches to make contact.  Over time, if there is tension on the cable, it will bend this...
Is there a difference in sound between a coax cable and an optical one?
How thick/heavy/stiff is your coax cable.  On heavier and stiffer cables, it puts stress on the RCA jack itself.  What happens is it bends the internal contact as the weight or stiffness of the coax cable applies tension.  At some point, the inter...
Music Server vs PC confused
If you are using this as purely a "music server" only, then I think the differences will not be that great.  That means the computer can act as the sever (or file server), but you will need a DLNA Renderer/Player devices that accepts the streamed ...
KEF Reference 5 vs. B&W 802 D3 speakers - which one better? your knowledges & opinions
If those are your choices, I would probably lean towards the KEF.  The McIntosh sound is very laid back on the attack and the B&W D3 have a soft attack in the midrange (due to their woven midrange design).  It's a soft flexible cone that is de...
XLR connectors
Neutrik is good as they are extremely cheap (like around $10 or even less).  However, they are very thin hollow metal conductors.  They are very good resolution for being a gold-plated conductor, but they have a bit of dry glare (due to low mass h...
Help on diy cable construction
Searching ebay for "techflex" will get you a lot of options.  for the 14/2, you are probably fine with 3/8" techflex, but you should probably order some 1/2" just to be sure.  It's cheap enough.
Has anyone heard the Lexicon MC-10 processor and can they describe its characteristics.
Please be aware that I have seen a number of Lexicon processors being sold without the remote.  If you don't have the remote, it's impossible to configure the unit.
ATI 6007 v. Krell Chorus
"a bit thin" is subjective. A drastic example would be comparing a Bryston 7b3 amp with Parasound JC1 in high-bias Class A mode. The Bryston is a very fast responding Class AB amp. The Parasound is Class A to 25 watts (which is pretty significant)...
ATI 6007 v. Krell Chorus
Krell Chorus line is a very refined, but very smoothed out sound.  It really smooths over the high frequencies (it is not a high frequency resolution monster!).  I have no direct experience with ATI, but I think it's going to be more neutral and c...
Digital Coax Cable - Does the Length Make a Difference
Any optical cable that is lower cost (under $50-60) is going to be made from monofilament plastic.  While these are okay, they do also have a loss of high frequency resolution.  If you use optical, you really want a glass fiber cable.  These are d...
Aurender VS Innuos
I had the opportunity to audition an Innous Zenith used as a music server over the network.  This means it just had music files and transmitted the file data to a DLNA player/digital transport DAC.  I found that it colored and smoothed the sound e...
Digital Coax Cable - Does the Length Make a Difference
I have recently heard definite differences between a 1 meter and 2 meter digital S/PDIF.  This includes even a true BNC to BNC cable with proper BNC connection on source and DAC.  Using a Nordost Heimdall 2 cable, there was a loss of high frequenc...
First impressions. What multi-channel disc is your favorite
Daryl Hall and John Oats "Live At The Troubadour" is an excellently recorded and multi-channel mixed concert.  Unfortunately, it is only available in DVD format, but it is rather excellent anyways.Melody Gardot "Live At The Olympia Paris" blu-ray ...
