Sound of chip amps / gainclones?
Bemoptil23, I've got my Tang-Band W4-1320SA half way completed. They have a F-R designed for near-wall or O-B (open baffle). I also considered the FR-125 but has a 5dB boost to the bass and a correspondingly low SPL of 85 dB. Why loose efficiency ...
Sound of chip amps / gainclones?
Gmood1, good to hear from you. You got the patek from Peter Daniel's? From what I've read the LM3875 chips like a tube pre while a good T amp does better with a passive. I'm also looking at the Charlize amp. Which supposedly does not have the HF b...
Wood cones - any experiences?
I DISliked the JVC very much. Strange resonances seemed to unnaturally enhance the reverb in Chris Isaac's "Dream About You". Then again JVC electronics are pretty bad to begin with. Usually this is grain or brightness, not reverb. I like Denon UD...
audiophiles or retrophiles
What I don't understand is why people think you need tubes and vinyl to get that type of sound. I agree with KR4 in Stereophile9/2005 page 99 re: Almarro M0A speakers:"The speaker sounded like a SET amp. I never actually drove the M0A with a SET a...
trying to upgrade speakers
And you didn't consider the Spendor 8se's to be an upgrade? Maybe try the older Sendor 1/2's (there is a dealer in southwestern CT - not far from NYC) or the smaller version if they have it. I think this would give the bass and midrange you desire...

Which speakers excel at low volume?
Pick a speaker that CAN"T play loud. Speakers that play loud are a compromise when all you need is quite listening levels.I agree about x-overless designs. Try Epos M12/M15; single driver Fostex, Jordan or paper driver speakers like the old Virgo ...
Which Hi-end monitor for near field listening
Genelec active 8030's are $1,100/pr go into the 30's. Huge, dynamic, tight bass for such little speakers - in line with Dynaudio BM-7's ($1,650.00). We like the Genelec's better. Active so amps are built into speakers. Just need CDP with volume.Be...
SS amp mosfet 'haze' - ever experienced this?
Musical Fidelity bi-polars are much clearer than Creek Mosfet.
Eco-friendly Bamboo ply speakers
Shoe, Wal-mart sells them. Much nicer than the regular wood. Bamboo is thinner and harder. I'm so impressed with mbamboo cutting board, I may get bamboo hardwood floors put down. Who knows, maybe reside my house with bamboo too :-).
Eco-friendly Bamboo ply speakers
Hi Creeper, thanks for the interest. No JTM clone. Because I only listen at 70dB, a single driver speaker is practical for the way I listen. Furthermore because they beam above 3-4kHz, I don't have problems anymore with boosts in HF from wide disp...
Does a listening room help or hinder?
Bigjoe, if I had my way, I'd let the whole darned neighborhood hear some music :-).I was thinking about doing a post on "Listening habits - how do you listen to your stereo". Probably a stupid idea so never did. But I listen while working (or play...
