Is soundstage DEPTH a myth?
@hypoman  Your comments are among the most relevant to the issue.  Many pop/rock recordings, and other studio recordings, don't have genuine depth.  Well-recorded orchestral recordings are perhaps the best for hearing depth, partly because there ...
Learned something new today and it isn't good.
I have an old tube DAC that has de-emphasis circuitry and an indicator light when a CD has pre-emphasis.  Only a few classical CDs in my collection made this indicator light go on; maybe I don't listen to those anymore, but I haven't been troubled...
Audiophile sound quality from a more "mainstream" company?
I had a JVC FX-1100 AM/FM tuner which performed well until it started having reliability problems.  It was a well-designed unit with lots of bells and whistles and jacks for two antennae, which would be useful for those trying to pick up stations ...
David Crosby R.I.P.
As a harmony singer and composer I think he held his own with his bandmates, and IICORMN has remained one of my favorite albums since its release (and it has long been included in TAS's recommended LPs, for good reason--Croz noted that the enginee...
Is there anything better than live recordings?
@gosta Thanks for suggesting Live at Hull--I didn't even know about this recording!  I've been streaming it and enjoying it.  Without comparing them directly, from my memory the guitar and drums sound better than Leeds;  I think the vocals are mix...
Is there anything better than live recordings?
For me, many of the classic rock bands made better studio albums than their live performances--Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Derek and the Dominos, Frank Zappa. This is particularly true with those artists who really used the studio ...
RIP Jeff Beck
Beck was one of the main influences on my electric-guitar playing.  I was very impressed with the Truth album, and later discovered his Yardbirds work and followed his career from then on.  Got to see him live 4 times, from the early '70s into the...
Cables from amp to preamp or longer speaker cables…
I ran a pair of 7.5 meter, unbalanced interconnects from preamp to amps, with very short speaker cables, for years with no problems.  Recently, I replaced my 30-year-old interconnects with Morrow Audio cables, which are unshielded.  This caused so...
Cambridge CXN V2 or Innuos Pulse Mini?
A correction to my last post.  The video from Vinshine Audio is about an LPS upgrade that apparently is made neither by them/Denafrips or by Bluesound.
Cambridge CXN V2 or Innuos Pulse Mini?
@macg19 I’m not familiar with the components you have, so I can’t really judge if the Node is actually the weakest link. But some Audiogoners and pro reviewers have compared the Node’s performance to much pricier streamers (the TAS review of the...
Cambridge CXN V2 or Innuos Pulse Mini?
I have the Bluesound Node, the Cambridge Audio CXU  (a universal disc player with Wolfson DAC chips), and an Ares II. I haven’t done the research to compare the DAC of the CXN and the CXU. The DAC of the Node is comparable in SQ to that of my CXU...
Favourite Guitarists
Keeping in mind the OP asked about "favourite guitarists," not "best" or "greatest," I came up with this list.  I've been a guitarist for 55 years, and these are the 10 guitarists I most enjoy listening to, if I haven't forgotten someone: Jeff Be...
Best digital format (non streaming)
Now that I've heard SACDs played with their DSD resolution, I would rank the media as follows: SACD DVD or Blu-Ray HDCD CD This is based on playing them all through the same transport and DAC.  So, basically, the higher the resolution, the be...
Digital is far better than vinyl
@lalitk  The record player in that video you shared is amazing!  It can make Howlin' Wolf sound just like Dave Brubeck!
DH Labs
I recently replaced a Cable Solutions Canare LV-77S digital S/PIDF cable with a DH Labs D-750, and I think I heard an improvement right off the bat, even though the LV-77S had the benefit of several days of break-in.  The DH Labs was recommended b...
