Upgrade my DAC or buy more weed?
@ncarv That's just one study, but it's interesting nonetheless, considering that almost any time you burn plant or animal you create carcinogens, if this study is validated by a number of more studies I'll truly be impressed. As someone who likes ...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
That's a lot of bypass for an MR. Considering the costs, have you actually heard them ?? Personally, I'd bypass Clarity MR with copper foil caps and be very happy. I find the Mundorf SIO's to add a Disney like sheen or scintilation to the top end....
DSD vs. PCM vs. MQA - Group listening experiment
@georgelofi Yep, I wrote a similar point several weeks ago on an earlier Stereophile posting, before they had any real explanations. Bandwidth and disk space is much cheaper than it was. I could see it having a benefit to the service providers tho...
power conditioning question gentlemen
To be complete, series surge supression is a licensed technology which SurgeX also licenses, and there may be others. SurgeX charges about twice what Furman does in the pro/commercial space though, so I haven't mentioned it. SMP just happens to be...
power conditioning question gentlemen
Depending on what you need, you can get some features much cheaper. For instance, I think the SMP enabled surge protectors start under $200. http://amzn.to/2b11jgrAs a surge, noise and over voltage protector, it’s as good as any other unit you can...
power conditioning question gentlemen
Furman's pro gear is very cost effective, and among the best surge protection you can buy if you get the line with series mode surge protection. Richard Gray's is very expensive, but does a great job of cleaning up noise, however it's not a true s...
Why do so few low power amplifiers using 300B have balanced inputs?
Cost. I know some professional amplifiers that have balanced inputs, but internally short pin 3 to ground. It's kind of a waste, but it's a necessary convenience feature there. In the residential world, you could add an XLR input, and do the same t...
Review: Wyred4Sound Remedy Reclocker
Hi @cooper52 ! I have, and it’s really quite marvelous! :) So far I’ve only fed it from my Logitech SB Touch. It took about 2-4 days to fully mellow out. The first couple of days the treble was too etched and was over-dynamic. Possibly sounding th...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Mundorf is sold more ore less by the uF:uF x y = $$but Clarity is (uF * x) + 30 = $$That is, for the MR line there is a $30 upcharge every time you add a Clarity cap.  I don't see exactly which line of Clarity and voltage. Same for Mundorf. Usuall...
What is the single best pre amp you have ever hear
Heard? Conrad Johnson Premiere or Sonic Frontiers. I am afraid that was the last time I spent a lot of time really listening to preamps. I have heard the Ayre and they are pretty excellent, as are the pass labs, but neither had enormous sense of s...
Just how much do speakers suppose to vibrate?
In a well treated room, the sides and rear aren't as important as the doppler effect of the speaker itself actually moving back and forth. Adding weights is the best thing you can do. :) But it only matters if you can hear it. Best,Erik
Are all resistors the same for tweeter attenuation on Maggies?
Hi Thxbest, Not sure what comes with Maggies, but I usually use Mills. 12 Watts are around $6. Mundorf wire wounds are very popular, and if you want to try something truly essoteric, the Caddock MP with the right heat sinks are available, and pric...
Tweaks for a new ARC preamp?
Have you listened to PrimaLuna? Also, have you listened to the newest ARC? It's not the same. :) Best,Erik
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
@oleschool is right, but I think the issue isn’t small vs. large, it’s more about bass limiting. I can set up 15" subs with any planar speaker and make them sound lightning fast. They will have measurably deeper bass, lower distortion and less com...
Upgrade my DAC or buy more weed?
There is always "different" but "better" is harder to come by. :) What is it you are missing? Is your imaging, sound stage what you want? Do you care about air and space around notes of more intimate music? It’s a great thing to be happy with what...
