MQA - One Filter to Rule them All?
OK, I just gave up on MQA. Stereophile's latest article starts with such shameless hyperbole that it's gone off into the land of cold-fusion, dark energy reactors, and healing cancer with magnets. It's not like I didn't know Stereophile has to make...
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
@oleschool Not sure what you are differing to. ;) I was making two different statements.  One, noting that we didn't really discuss transmission lines yet as another way to get more out of smaller drivers. All things being equal, 2 drivers does no...
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
We never did discuss Transmission Line enclosures either, or dual woofer scenarios. Dual woofer's aren't quite as good as more diameter inches, but they don't hurt. :)
Phono/preamp/amp chain. One of them tube the others SS. Which one?
Not all devices, and not all systems are equal, of course. Some only listen to vinyl "seriously" others like me are all about music that fits on a memory device somewhere. However, based on past experience, I'd say the preamp should be tube, and I ...
Does a sub need to be on the floor?
Doh, I meant to type:"Quick answer, sure, you can raise it off the floor or even put it on furniture." Best,Erik
Would owning Hoover Dam improve the midrange?
I actually would like to see the rest of his system actually. I wonder if he's another of these Japanese fans with a closet sized listening room with giant JBL monitors in them? :) Best,Erik
Does a sub need to be on the floor?
Quick answer, sure, just make sure it's not going to rattle the furniture. But before you worry about that, look at the discussion about whether anyone needs more than an 8" woofer. :)I think you are putting the carriage before the horse here. :) G...

Here by the way is a really good 2 way speaker kit with a 10" woofer, would run you around $1k to build it yourself.https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/2-way-speaker-kits/seas-a26-10-2-way-kit-pair-based-on-the-cla...I have no financial interest...
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
@james633 Show me music that has that much content below 40 Hz. Show me an affordable speaker that goes down to 20 Hz with measured low distortion. Show me a modest living room that doesn’t have significant room modes below 80 Hz. So, I think for ...
Subwoofer hunt
When comparing subs, the total system cost is important.  For $4k do you get 1 sub, or a pair of subs and $1,500 worth of acoustic treatment and a high quality digital equalizer? I've yet to see or hear a sub that is better in this regard than a H...
Would owning Hoover Dam improve the midrange?
You simply must wait for the Signature version. All the glaring problems with the original version are completely and perfectly fixed. It also comes with a new proprietary quantum entangled, photon blocking insulator that prevents light and squirre...
MQA - All the Gory details over at Stereophile
@mahler123 I agree that the samples of music did nothing for me, but then, I'm afraid none of the samples at 2L did all that much for me, in any format. :) Maybe it's just not my type of recording.Best,Erik
Parasound p5 vs avr ???????
Never heard the Marantz, so I can't tell you.  Loved their old remotes though. :) But if the choice is a P5 or nothing, I'd say nothing. :) Keep your money in your pocket for something better.  P7's used show up for not much more.Best,Erik
Suggestions on a new /used amp for Focal speakers.
As luck would have it, another DIYer has posted the schematics for the 826 V (not W) here:http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/269257-focal-chorus-826v-crossover-advice-needed.htmlHere the crossover avoids necessary components instead of addin...
Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
@gvasale In absolute terms you are right. There's no way to get high dynamic range and low distortion bass without moving a lot of air, which means driver diameter.  However....With proper room treatment, placement and tuning a good 6" to 8" woofe...
