Some of the newer McIntosh MX series Pre/Pros have various loudness, you could check to see if their C series has it also. 
Winamp with ASIO Plugin
I ran into the same problem. Since then I've been using Foobar. It's not as pretty, but it's less of a resource hog and does what it's supposed to do without any problems. 
Cable TV digital music
It will sound better than using the cable box's DAC's, but it's still low res music. Same as putting lipstick on a pig. :D

Good speakers at low volume?
Depending on the speaker design, you may be able to remove some of the stuffing/polyfill. This may add more bass at low volumes, but will cause them to be boomy at loud volumes.
