Bose buys McIntosh
Sad day for McIntosh.  Even if Bose intends to allow McIntosh to retain their current quality and reputation as an audiophile company, my experience in situations such as this is that the culture of the parent company cannot help but infect the on...
Tube sound is not about warmth. It's about correct presentation.
Back in the mid-80s Bob Carver challenged the writers of Stereophile Magazine that he could tweak his relatively inexpensive solid state amp to sound exactly the same as any tube amp of their choosing. The writers of Stereophile accepted the chall...
It was 61 years ago today...
I was 10 years old and if you weren't around, I can tell you the Beatles arrival changed the music universe profoundly and forever.  Their music clearly exceeded the sum of the parts and literally changed and grew with each succeeding album.   I ...
Why Is Hi Fi Gear So Darn Expensive?
More than any other hobby I can think of, audiophiles seem to associate quality with seemingly outlandish prices.  I don't deny there is a general relationship between price and quality, but it is inconsistent and certainly way out of proportion a...
When choosing new Speakers, what matters most to you?
I wish I had an unlimited budget but I don't, so after I determine what speakers are within my budget, "musicality" matters most.  I am most interested in a speaker that to my ears recreates both voice and instruments to how I believe they should ...
What Is The Most Romantic Song That You Have Ever Listen To?
Lots of romantic songs here.  Let me add the song that Frank Sinatra called the most romantic song ever, and that is "Something" by George Harrison.
Worst Concerts You Have Attended ??
Worst concert was probably Eric Clapton at the Spectrum in the early 70's.  It seemed like every song turned into a jam session that went on endlessly.  It probably didn't help that we had seats in the crow's nest and the weed smoke was so bad tha...
Usless but interesting ....how many of you old timers started with original Large Advents?
I had several friends with the Advents which I remember to be warm and very listen-able.   I started with AR-11s, which were a little more powerful and had a good tight bottom end.
Stereo Receivers from the past...
Dating myself a bit, but I had a Harman Kardon 730 (Twin Powered).  Incredible sound, surprising headroom, and a great tuner for its time.
Do you guys like Adele's music?
Like nails against a chalkboard.
Would "Sgt. Pepper's" be a better album if.....
SP was pure creative genius, particularly the work done in the studio at a time when recording electronics were archaic by today's standards.  I agree with several here that a couple of the songs are not the Beatles best, but in usual Beatles fash...
New Member Needs Help
Sorry for the delayed response.  Been busy prepping for a getaway to some nicer weather - Florida.  To answer the question, I live in central PA, outside Harrisburg.  Not to refuse help, but I think I will at least start with an audition of all cu...
New Member Needs Help
As you can probably determine from my first post, I was away from this for about 20 years - a long time.  When I started doing some serious listening to my system, I was obviously disappointed from what I heard.  As such, I had not set any budget....
New Member Needs Help
First, thank you everyone for your responses.  The knowledge here is impressive.  I first took note of ebm's and several others suggestions to just move on with new equipment.  It is undoubtedly the simple and effective solution and I am going to ...
New Member Needs Help
We are in a similar boat Rich.  Having recently retired at 60, I would like to use the equipment I have and save the major expenditure but clearly don't want to throw money at a lost cause.  The Grand Soliloquy's were great sounding speakers at th...
