How am I frying all my amps? Oscillating? Help
A preamp can, in fact, cause that kind of damage if its DC blocking caps are not doing their job. I think your amps are being slowly poisoned by DC, whether it's from the preamp or the wall socket.
Cables that cost more than good loudspeakers
It's all about what you want and are willing to pay. I know of someone who spent almost as much for his custom kitchen as I spent on my house. That, too, can be considered crazy until you put in perspective - he also paid nearly ten times what I d...
Running Speaker Wire through Drywall
Just hire an electrician. They can do this quickly and neatly and in the long run cost less than gathering all the tools, your time and not to mention the cost of damaging the dry wall (that is, I assume, what you are most concerned with).
Is the market changeing?
Which products are now cheaper from a year ago? A pair of Thiel 3.7's went from just under ten grand a pair to over 12 grand in a matter of months. That doesn't happen because of a lack of interest or a down market. Unless you're talking about eco...
Can an amp overdamp a speaker?
Duke, I agree that using speaker equations can show that the lower cutoff frequency is a function of Qe. For example, if you assume a speaker design with a Qt of 0.707 with a driver that has a voice coil resistance of 5 ohms, a Qm of 3, 8 ohm impe...
Can an amp overdamp a speaker?
Duke, I am confused. Can you please explain how one can tell by looking at a speaker response curve if it has a solid state or tube amp in mind? I always thought that those curves were amplifier-independent and any off-bass responses were the resu...
Are interconnect cables worth $15,000?
Everything is worth only what you are willing to pay.
concrete slab vs/ wood floor - pros and cons
Removing the concrete floor may cause you problems. Sounds like what you descibe is a floating slab construction where the entire weight of the garage is spead out over the 11 by 17 area. If you remove the slab what remains is the concrete under t...
Why do amps sound different?
Cost. Every amplifier is designed to a price point. Since there's no such thing as a perfect amplifier, each manufacturer strives for the best sound within a budget (assuming that's the design criteria). Everything inside the amplifier imparts dis...
What's causing distortion at musical climax?
You left speakers off the list - they may not be able to handle the power or the drivers have reached their excursion limits. You also do not make it clear if it's limited to vinyl only.
Balanced SET Amplifier
The XLR inputs of the Lamms are for convenience - to save an owner the expense of new IC's - and not for balanced operation. By definition, single-ended-triode (SET) operation involves amplifying the entire signal with only one output device. A ba...
Second failure of new amplifier
Is it always the same tube socket? If it is, check the socket under a bright light. Look for burn marks, carbon deposits or mechanical damage in the pin holders and solder points. Use a magnifying glass as even a carbon coating could cause an arc ...
Are attenuators linear or logarithmic?
Attenuators are logarithmic because our hearing response to changes is SPL is logarithmic. Each step resistance is calculated to result in the voltage ratios being doubled for every 6 dB's. Even though each discrete step is linear, the combined st...
FUSES VALUES: 250 volts VS 500 volts
Use an 8 amp fuse, no more no less. If you were to use instead 4 amps you would be popping a 30 dollar fuse every time you try to power up.Never ever listen to anyone contradicting the equipment manual or the manufacturer's tech support.
Damping factor or watts?
DF will not control the driver excursion. The driver will move somewhat with inertia when the signal stops regardless of DF. What happens is that the moving driver acts like a microphone as the cone moves in the voice coil creating an emf. If the ...
