Does it have to sound good for you to like it?
On the other hand, I don't want to 'imagine' how it should sound, I want to hear sounds as close to the reality as possible. It is not possible to get deep into the music if you don't hear enough of it. It makes no difference whether you are a pro...

immatthewj, of course the better your rig is the more you hear all the distortion and noise and compression and lack of things that should be there, but on the other hand you also hear more of what you want to hear. I strongly prefer this to heari...
Best 12AU7?
I see no reason to even consider reissues for small tubes.
Which has a greater influence on sound quality, the amp or the preamp?
Yes, but there is always a point when it is time to upgrade speakers too.

I may be wrong but I have an impression that quite a number of audiophiles use different brands of preamp and power amp. Many also think that it is in fact more difficult to make a great preamp than power amp. Besides, synergy doesn't mean it must...
Would you still pay $10k or more for a turntable not full analog front end these days ?
kennyc, besides being very useful to me, Nakamichi 682ZX tape deck that I have is a piece of audiophile history. It is also analog almost all in one component, you can listen to it with headphones. Its headphone amp is not great but not too bad. ...
Auditioning Used Equipment - Am I crazy ?
I don't think the dealer should've said yes instead of no but he could've done your a favour. He didn't. What was the probability of you buying that 10K piece ?

Right. Sometimes I do listen to mostly for the sound but rarely, though the music still has to be good. If I don't like it I won't listen at all. mikhailark, if the band, Pink Floyd in this case, decides then why did they settle for less? They ha...

Though I don't follow current prices, I believe it is necessary to spend $25k-$30k on entire analog front end to have a great sound. You can have good or even excellent sound for less, that's true.
Best 12AU7?
I use RCA black plates from 50s in driver position, very balanced and full sound. But I also use Mullards 12AX7 long plates in preamp. Excellent match, anyway, but it won't give the best high frequency extension.

Does great recording quality make average music sound better and almost acceptable ? By the way, Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd is average quality. Who produced it ? Great album, though.

Some audiophiles probably do that but I believe most don't. Arrogant statement indeed.
Do you belong more to souce first or to speakers first school of thought ?
That's the advantage of any great source component - it will work just fine in any room where there is enough space to put it in. You always have to deal with resonance control, though.

Buying land with $10k may be a good idea but how much of it could I get and where ? I never go cheap, I always jump not make one or two small steps up. This includes NOS tubes. I can't afford the very best but I try to go reasonably high.

There are two quite clearly divided camps here. Besides, that's when true audiophile rig shows real class - when it achieves an impossible task of making poor recordings sound tolerable.
