Are all amps being built wrong? There is a purity and transparency of the sound of the Futterman's that must be heard to be believed! I first heard a friend's pair driving Quad 57's back in 1978 and was instantly convinced that the Futterman OTL's are world-beater amps!
Are all amps being built wrong? I have three Futterman OTL's. Two mono's and a stereo chassis version that Julius made and sold as the Harvard Music H3 in the mid-Sixties. That one got a review in the old High Fidelity mag! The H3 I bought has an added pair of Altec autoformers ...
Are all amps being built wrong? The solution is to add an autoformer to the Futterman OTL's output. Say, 16 to 32 ohms. This will allow low impedance drive. And a corresponding increase in power/watts from 60 to 120 to 240 from a sextet of 6LF6 output tubes!
Are all amps being built wrong? Julius Futterman solved the tube amp feedback problem by eliminating the output transformer. His OTL amps can have 60 db feedback with low output impedance and low harmonic/IM distortion. Yet remain 100% stabile into complex loads! The drawback is...
Are all amps being built wrong? Look up Ohm's Law!
Are all amps being built wrong? Because a current drive amp is only useful with a speaker that has a flat impedance. Otherwise the amp will act as a tone control and follow the dips and peaks of the speaker's impedance curve. This can hardly be called "accurate"!

Low budget vintage preamp or new I also have three more tube preamps: a Dynaco PAS-3 (DKL Labs mod), a Counterpoint and a Trevor Lees. All under $1K apiece and from eBay. Any of these and the two above are easy recommendations!
Low budget vintage preamp or new Here"s what I have: Conrad Johnson PV-3 (four-tubes) and an Audio Research SP6 (six tubes). Both excellent preamps and not too expensive. $600 and $850 are the approximate prices I paid. They work fine! Bought on eBay.
Advent 300 The NAD 3020 appeared a year later in '78 and became the new darling. I bought two!
Advent 300 The Advent 300 is a 15wpc FM receiver with pre/power jacks. The Audio Critic liked it back in 1977!
Cable co. is forcing me to rent or buy what they call a That's called a router - used to descramble channels on a digital cable. I had one in use which I had to pay $8 a month rent from Spectrum.
I have a good SUT. Need MM Phono Pre for DL103R Why spend a lot for a unit to use while your Lamm is repaired? Get a Schiit Mani for $129. It’s an excellent phono stage!
how is digital sound created? +1 yage! It is obvious that millercarbon did not know what "interpolation" is!
how is digital sound created? +1 cleeds! Too many still believe that more expensive DACs do a better job of "smoothing out" the steps between digital samples. Nonsense! My $99 DAC outputs rival those of any four-figure DAC (low noise, low distortion, accurate LSB ...). |
