Dahlquist DQ10 issues
Could be a rubbing voice coil on that woofer. Did you ever have the foam surrounds replaced on both woofers?
Onkyo P-308 recapping/upgrading
If it stops working only replace the failed parts.
Looking for my "last" CD transport
Just buy a new cheap DVD player and use its digital output jack into your DAC. Bits are bits - whether they come from a $100 DVD player or a $5000 boutique transport. I guarantee you will hear no difference!
Blown tube issue
Manley and other tube amp companies should always provide information for proper bias adjustment. Tube amps do need this done when output tubes are changed.
Blown tube issue
If cathode bias each EL34 has a resistor going to ground. Too low of a resistor value and the output tube anode (plate) will draw too much current and get red-hot. Bad! Is that what happened to some of the EL34's? The same thing will happen in fix...
Blown tube issue
Is the Manley amp fixed bias or cathode bias? If fixed you must adjust the bias current so the EL34's do not exceed their plate current limit. A multimeter is needed. Ask Manley for the procedure. You can do it yourself.
Are "vintage" DAC's worthwhile, or is this a tech that does not age well
Back in the 80’s the first test done was comparing the Theta DAC (designed by Mike Moffat) against the Sony Discman. Electronics used were by Boulder and speakers were Quad 63’s. After many trials the final scores were no better than 50/50.
Are "vintage" DAC's worthwhile, or is this a tech that does not age well
Clever marketing psychology drives the market for new DACs. In controlled A/B tests nobody can distinguish a $100 DAC from a $1000+ one. The loudest complaints against this will of course be from those with the most money invested.
Are "vintage" DAC's worthwhile, or is this a tech that does not age well
All competently-designed DACs will sound alike. This applies to ones from 20+ years ago to the present. There is NO ever-upward increase in sound quality. The proliferation of ever more expensive DACs is a marketing ploy based upon confirmation bi...
Looking for my Final Pair!!
Bozak Concert Grands!
Speaker Spike Philosophy
Spikes under speakers is another cure in search of a disease - to borrow a medical metaphor. I am unaware of any speaker that is affected by woofer/driver motion. Another marketing ploy to get the gullible and insecure to spend more money!
Ready, set, comment! Speaker cables don’t make a difference?
A tedious and boring subject!
Brainstorm Thursday. Are we approaching the Audiophile Singularity?
I agree with djones51. Preamps/amps/DACs have achieved equivalence. Speakers remain the largest source of distortion and "coloration".
5AR4/GZ34/5U4/5Y3 SS conversion
I think you will still need some dropping resistors added to equal the voltage drop of those tube rectifiers!
Analog upgrade path
If $750 for the Hana SL is too much, a Hana EL for $500 should be more affordable. I recommended the SL first because its Shibata stylus offers superior performance and longer wear than an elliptical stylus.
