Any love for Musical Fidelity integrateds?
I bought the M2si when Upscale Audio had it for $599. I was looking for an integrated with more power at 4 ohms for small Magnepan MMGW speakers. It was a very lively amp, solidly built and had good sound, but in the end just a little too bright f...
Buying a new TT today
I’m going to give you two responses, one involving upgrades and one involving a new setup, because I’ve done the first and considered the second. The Debut Carbon/ Ortofon 2M Red is a good deal. I assume you have a DC model TT and don’t have hum o...
Sexy singer(s) and/or song(s)
Whenever I play Melody Gardot’s “Your Heart is Black as Night,” my wife always says, “oh, the sexy one again.”  I really don’t care for what “squeaky” female vocalists. Give me Nina Simone or Mary Chapin Carpenter any day.
Diminishing Returns
The great thing about shopping for speakers is that it’s so subjective (it’s all in your head, you know). All you have to do is discover what you like. That said, the last time I was auditioning speakers I thought Wharfedale beat Elac and others. ...
Who buy PS AUDIO ?
I’m a lifelong “value” shopper, and for my budget that meant PS Audio was too expensive, even if I do think Paul McGowan is just great. But last year I decided to upgrade my DAC, a $300 Musical Fidelity V-90. I had auditioned that puppy against $1...
Are manufacturer AC cables good enough?
I bought my first aftermarket power cords after getting a PS Audio power plant, the Stellar PP3. First, the cord the PP came with is pretty darn stout. I replaced it with AQ’s NRG4. I got two Shunyata Venom 14s for my Rogue Sphinx amp and DirectSt...
high quality turntable with built in phono at $1000?
+1 for noromance. Let the turntable do it’s job spinning vinyl and let a Mani or other standalone phono stage, or a built-in phono stage in an amp/preamp do its thing.
Sales or clearances happening now
Well, I decided to do my bit to save the economy and ordered the PS Stellar Power Plant. To trim the outlay I’ll trade in the V-90 DAC. Just seems like a good deal and a good time to spend the money since we’re all supposed to get a $1,200 check s...
Sales or clearances happening now
Hilde45: re gear to trade in. I have the Musical Fidelity V-90 DAC that the DirectStream replaced, good for $300 on trade-in. But it’s been so good that I repurposed it with the little integrated amp/DAC I use for casual listening in another room....
Sales or clearances happening now
I’ve been waffling on a PS Audio Stellar Power Plant, $1759 or something like that at 20% off. That’s about the very most I would consider spending on power. Any thoughts? (I also bought a DirectStream DAC late last year when they sold it for $399...
Usless but interesting ....how many of you old timers started with original Large Advents?
1976, first real job and spent weeks listening to two local dealers and their gear. I was taken with the large Advents in walnut for their solid, non-boomy bass and adjustable treble in a furniture-grade cabinet. Paired with a Marantz 2230 receive...
There's a lot more bass in a 6.5" driver than most of you think
I think it’s worth noting that the prototype Magnepan “30.7 for condos” recently shown uses multiple smaller woofers for its bass component. All the options available and that’s what they chose. You can argue that the company is trying to keep up ...
Magnepan 1.7 i - Amp suggestions
I have Magnepan 0.7s. When buying I auditioned NAD 368 and Rogue Sphinx. The NAD had a bit more sibilance on vocals while the Sphinx sounded more natural. So I went with Sphinx and am very happy. BTW, ignore claims that any class of amp universall...
Amp for nee LRS Maggies
I’ve been very happy with a Rogue Sphinx for Maggie .7s.
Moderately priced audio
+1 for dweller’s inflation-adjusted example. And it’s accurate in my case. In 1975 I got my first job and spent $700 for a new stereo: Marantz 2230, Advent speakers and AR turntable/cartridge. In 2015 I retired, claimed a former bedroom for my mus...
