Am I right for this forum?
A smart $3,000 system is superior to a dumb $30,000 system. Or certainly an even more obtuse 300k stack of gear with cryo everything but bad speaker placement. In this hobby.. these scenarios are easily entirely possible (especially if you're list...
Rogue Audio hard to resell, has it fallen out of favor ?
@phd ..good to hear. Used to have 80wpc tube monoblocks driving the top modules of Von Schweikert VR-4’s and the heat was incredible (but so was the sound.. at least up top). Unfort the first time I had to re-tube it required a dozen Sovtek 5881’s...
Rogue Audio hard to resell, has it fallen out of favor ?
@phd ...another Metis user. I Love my Metis because It’s only got two tube sockets.. no buffer tubes which means rolling is inexpensive.. and possible.. and gives very different results depending on the tube. NOS such as Tung Sol VT99, older Rayth...
Rogue Audio hard to resell, has it fallen out of favor ?
I’ve got I special Rogue two-tube VT99 preamp that I will probably never sell. I think in the case of the Sphynx (being a hybrid tube/class-D design), it has to compete in a rapidly changing and improving segment with saucy new technologies (GANFe...
Good Speakers for Rock and Roll Under 15K
Designers of course try and design the best speaker they can to serve their Co’s ethos and their brand’s demographic, but I’m not sure all well-designed speakers work equally well for all genres. I can’t imagine using Magnepans or Quad’s for rock....
Good Speakers for Rock and Roll Under 15K
I’ve heard lots of expensive horn speakers at high-end shows, yet for the money imo there’s still no competition for rock. Klipsch: Either the big "corner horn" (which don’t have to be in the corner anymore), or La Scala (which imo look better). L...
Speaker Spikes - Working Principle
I suspect that the less the structure housing a transducer moves/resonates during use.. the better it can sound.. or at least the less it would influence the sound (although this wouldn’t seem to be a linearly proportional relationship). It might ...
WHY IS THERE SO MUCH HATE FOR THE HIGH END GEAR ON AUDIO GEAR?
Some bullet points based on perceptions of what’s under the bell curve. The modal demographic. For context.. I’m a 58yo audiophile. Supposedly. In the hobby since the 1980’s. - Young ppl (under 30.. maybe even 35 to 40yo’s in cities) tend to live...
W4S DAC
I use a W4S DAC2-DSD. It does a reasonable job with the sound.. perhaps not as analogue as an R2R or as future proof as FPGA, but if you're good with IIR filters it can offer a clean detailed top end that plays well with good speakers with extende...
Full range stand mounted speakers
Ocean Way Audio Eureka’s. Not really full-range but when I turn off my (thoroughly dsp’d) sub, I can’t say there’s much of a difference. It is subtle.. so they are definitely getting into the low 30’s. They also image very well considering their ...
Class A integrated amp recommendations
Perla S50. It’s not Class A, but AB, however it sounds very organic, very class A. Single ended inputs only. I’d compare it to a Pass INT60, but more visceral, present, lifelike. One of those times I walked into a little crummy hotel room at a sh...
Really Inexpensive Systems That Sounded Great?
A fantastic dac/amp out of Canada that is, absurdly.. only $265, and it can drive most speakers... the Musical Paradise MP-303. I have bought more expensive cable elevators (...and they were cheap cable elevators). I was the first customer to writ...
Active Speakers Better? No, per Michael Borresen
Upper octave and lower octave room interactions seem quite different. One is a direct reflection that more or less preserves its waveform, so will be perceived as a smeared or reflected sound from the source (and not sure how you effectively dsp t...
Active Speakers Better? No, per Michael Borresen
Imo, subs are a different situation… 20-30ft LF wavelengths and room interaction.. so a sub needs dsp to deal with modal issues. A properly designed speaker has controlled dispersion above 80hz. And sure.. you can have a sub as separates if you w...
Active Speakers Better? No, per Michael Borresen
Not to beat a dead horse after my lengthy post, but read this active speaker review and you’ll have an idea if you want to go this route. This is a highly regarded all-in-one ’easy’ solution for going active. No doubt there are people who will wan...
