Greatest sonic impact: cables or ICs
I agree with the Anaysis Plus Oval Nines which I now use instead of AQ Midnights on my els's. While the AQ Type 4 you currently have is a good cable for the money, you may want to consider other used AQ cables if you like the sound. I have seen Mi...
Room too small - any suggestions
Since you stated that this is temporary, what about Apogee Centaur Minors, the smallest of the Apogee ribbon hybrids? You could have fun with these for about $500 or less, and dabble with ribons for a while. Probably less shock than going cold tur...
To tone control or not to tone control
Artemus, I can understand your dilema. My speakers are very revealing and while I have sorted out upstream components, it is still frustrating to listen to poorly recorded CD's. The more revealing and transparent your system is, the more source ma...
Where s the bass?
From another room, or even outside the sweet spot, you may be hearing room reflections. My best guess.
Excess Power Cord Length
Thanks for the input guys. These are all aftermarket cords. The only ones that aren't much longer than I need are the ones on my speaker interfaces. I did think briefly about shortening them, Dekay, but had the same concerns as you about the filte...
ARC 100 Mk11or Conrad Johnson 11a?
I have not heard esl's with the CJ, but the ARC did an excellent job with my esl's. I ultimately went with another amp (Mesa Baron) because of it's flexibility and the fact that I was able to trade other equipment, parting with less cash. I would ...
To Sub or not to Sub...?
Sugarbrie is correct. Subs when correctly matched to main speakers and properly set up can provide absolutely seamless integration. While the effects of my SW800's are dramatic (even startling), they are quite "invisible". They don't sound like se...
Best Martini s
Muso & Frank's. Hollywood, California. Hands down. Plus a mini-carafe on the side. Bartenders are classic -- none younger than 70 years old. These blokes know how to make a proper, non fu-fu, Martini. Now, for Martini Italiano -- i.e. a Negron...
To Sub or not to Sub...?
Hi Tin, which speakers are you considering adding the sub(s) to? What other speakers are you thinking about? I think this is as important as the subject of whether subs are better or worse. I really disagree with the broad strokes of the brush tha...
Time for spring cleaning
This thread makes me feel better about what's hiding in the closet... pairs of Apogee Centaurs and Maggie sMGA's; PS Audio Source/PS1 pre-amp; Rotel 965BX Ltd, DAC In The Box and DTI; Luxman tuner; Luxman cassette deck; Thorens TD160 Super turntab...
"Pop" in pre-amp
Since this is ss gear, why wouldn't you just leave everything on all the time? No pop. Better sound.
High ceilings and hardwood floors
DJ, I had a similar problem sans the 16' ceilings. A 10'x13' area rug over the listening area of a large stone tile room took care of the direct reflections from my CLS's. Canvas works on the back walls. Others tell me that plants, with lots of le...
audiophile quality multi -disc CDP s?
Just to clarify... I am referring to the 200 CD variety of players.
audiophile quality multi -disc CDP s?
I would imagine that if you add an anti-jitter device to one of these things it might be pretty good. In another thread someone suggested muti-disc players as the ultimate CD storage system -- now if you daisy-chain two or three of them you might ...
Battery Powered amps and preamps
I don't know about the other amps mentioned, but the N.E.W. amps had re-chargeable batteries. Plug them in after your listening session and you are ready for the next round, I agree that buying 35 batteries is a bit weird...
