What are your favorite songs or albums for illustrating a deep soundstage?
Dominique Fils-Aime / Stay Tuned does a fantastic job of projecting depth and width. An added bonus is that her music is extremely yummy.
Advice on how to liquidate system
Maybe not, but I feel a "Thanks for your service" is appropriate here. Truly from my heart.
Any Thoughts?
Am in total agreement drmuso with your insight. I have been building my system in the same room for 20 yrs. and have absolutely heard this occur. And as far as Taylors go, I will take Taylor Momsen over Swift all day long. For many reasons.
Help me upgrade my beginner system!
I agree that paired subs can have a dramatic effect on the music. Best system related decision I ever made was to finally go sub. Have never looked back. Three subs is even better.
What is the proper loudness for listening?
Bravo barts, I agree. My system sounds best at 90-100db and does it easily at about 25 watts a channel. The key is very dynamic and bass heavy music. To each his own, but what I have come to expect from music is a connection that can only be had a...
What is the most challenging music to play on a stereo?
To my ears the more resolving the stereo is, the harder rock is to play at louder levels. Distorted guitars come off as grating in many recordings from the decades that rock and roll dominated the airwaves. In the 70s and 80s most of this music wa...
Question: Sound Treatment behind the Listener?
I found In my rectangular room 12" of the wall and 12" of the ceiling full length of the rear wall and corners with absorption panels sounds the best. Like yours, my rear wall also has household objects that act as diffusion. +1 curiousjim... the ...
Technical assistance and recommendations needed
+1 for the Cardas speaker cables. You can buy the 4s11 in bulk and do your own pretty easily. No cable is an equalizer, but proper mating can really make a difference. My Klipsch Heritage speakers have all benefited from a Cardas cable of some sor...
Law Of Diminishing Returns?
As stated, aesthetics can play a roll for many of us but where sound quality is concerned my room has always dictated what gear worked best not the cost. That said, the choices you make in your acquisitions matter more than the price. I used gener...
Describe the "new HiFi sound"?
The somewhat recent integration of subwoofers and sub arrays into many systems, including my own has significantly changed the "sound" of those systems. Consequently, my musical tastes have evolved to maximize this.
What is the VERY BEST CD album you've ever heard?
For me it is Incubus / Science. Unique, interesting, recorded well and definitely rock.
un-becoming an audiophile
What I enjoy the most from my system is the push it gave me to explore music I might not have focused on. Gear matters... but the music is the reason it matters.
Passion, or ..... Precision?
I am 59 and grew up on the same music the OP did. My solution was to build an "out of the box system" that can still play my old favorites to a higher standard than most, but also can send shivers down the spine with the newer recordings. There is...
what are your top "audio bargins" in your system history?
My Marantz SA7S1 super audio player was a game changer in my system. Got it as a floor model for less than half price and is still spinning discs and sounding beautiful.
Women Who Rock
Women who "rock". Rock being the operative word. So far, at least half of those mentioned can not in any way be considered rock and roll artists. My list would include... Amy Lee, Grace Potter, Loise Post and Nina Gordon from Veruca Salt, Sandra N...
