Did I Expect too much?
Simonmoon,  The OP has  single-driver fullrange system; there is no crossover.  I’ve heard the slightly larger version of the OP’s speaker and it is the first single-driver system that I really liked a lot.  Since then, I’ve heard a few more grea...
Did I Expect too much?
I never heard s BD 5; I was kidding about that upgrade.  I have heard some pretty wild drivers, such as the equally expensive Voxativ fieldcoil full range driver.  I also heard a system with fiekd coil woofers and midrange drivers and a field coil...
Did I Expect too much?
I liked the Charney Companion speaker I heard with the AER BD3 driver.  This is a very lively sounding system with a surprisingly rich sound, not the sort of lean and mean sound one use to hear in single driver systems, and the top end was reasona...
Repair for speaker cabinet
Any furniture guy will know how to make it look better.  It is the perfect, or near perfect repair that would be costly.  That would require refinishing the entire cabinet, not just the point of damage.
Koetsu cartridges. They must be something special.
Jonathan Carr, the designer of Lyra cartridges, has praised Mr. Sugano of Koetsu for discovering the use of platinum alloy magnets.  This is particularly interesting because they both like platinum magnets even though they make quite different sou...
Did I Expect too much?
Manufacturers look for the cheapest parts that get them the sound they are looking to achieve.  That is a reasonable approach.  Any other part that alters the sound could be improving the sound or making it worse from the prospective of the buyer-...
Koetsu cartridges. They must be something special.
I have not heard one, but some say thar Etsuro Urushi cartridges are similar.  The bad news is that they are quite expensive.
Analogue front end. You want more weight, scale and dynamics.Where do you start upgrading?
Dwette, You have a platter that is designed to transfer the vibrations imparted in the record by the stylus tracking the groove, precisely how Atmasphere described.  POM was chosen because it matches the characteristics of vinyl so energy is tran...
Koetsu cartridges. They must be something special.
Koetsu cartridges deliver a warm, rich and “saturated” sound without sounding murky or slow sounding which is not an easy trick to pull off.  The company closed recently but older cartridges can be re-tipped.  My local dealer uses someone in Calif...
Do vacuum tube test values reflect sound quality?
There are instances where someone gets tubes for well below market price, so it is entirely possible for you to have real Telefunkens.  If they are not new in box, the price could be substantially lower than the price I mentioned.  The good news i...
Do vacuum tube test values reflect sound quality?
I do hope you scored genuine Telefunken 803S tubes.  These days, they sell for up to $2,000 a pair.  The fakers have become increasingly sophisticated.  They use to offer their fakes at a price so low as to tempt even the wary.  These days, many o...
Repair for speaker cabinet
I am not someone who does such work, but I think it would help to know more about the specifics of the finish of your speaker (e.g., is it painted or stained wood or some kind of resin, is it a gloss finish or semi-gloss or matte), the extent of t...
Do vacuum tube test values reflect sound quality?
As lewn stated, one cannot tell by numbers what a tube will sound like.  The sound will be determined by the particular amp and the particular brand and construction of the tube for any given type.  Depending on the application, a tube can test qu...
Are internal component upgrades worth it.
No harm in just looking (yeah, right).  For speakers with a lively sound like Cornwalls, but a bit more refined sound, I suggest looking at Volti.  For speakers that can be used close to room boundaries, like the Cornwalls, I suggest looking at Au...
Are internal component upgrades worth it.
L-Pad attenuators look like a potentiometer, but they are two potentiometers in one,  that will simultaneously increase resistance in one circuit while decreasing resistance in another.  When wired into the speaker crossover circuit, they allow th...
