Stereo Times 2024 MOST WANTED COMPONENTS List
I got to touch a QSA fuse, but, I did not get to hear them.  It is simply too risky to actually power up gear with that fuse in place.  A linestage came into the shop I frequent for repairs.  It had a QSA fuse in it, which was immediately removed ...
The $27,900 disappointment? Wilson Audio Watt Puppy 8 issues.
Isn't this a "review" by a competitor who mostly criticizes the design choices made by Wilson for the Watt/Puppy?  There is no such thing as a set of perfect design, so that any choice necessarily involves compromises.  If you optimize one thing, ...
Your journey with lower-watt tube amps -- Can a kit be good enough?
The mention of a directly coupled cathode follower by atmasphere is interesting.  Today, I just happen to be looking at the schematic for an old Wyetech SET amp and noticed it had a directly coupled cathode follower to the grid of the output tube.
Your journey with lower-watt tube amps -- Can a kit be good enough?
I don't want to interpret for someone else, particularly someone with vastly more hands on equipment building and technical knowledge than Alex Berger, but, I don't think "impossible" meant it cannot be done--its more like it cannot be done optima...
HAVE CABLES EVER TAKEN YOUR SYSTEM FROM SOUNDING JUST OK TO SOUNDING GREAT? Experiences ?
i am in general agreement that cable changes tend to be more subtle than major component changes as to sonic effect.  However, if you went from bad cable or cables that were inappropriate for your system and taste to something that is better suite...
Beware, scammers everywhere
A dealer in my area makes high end custom tube amps, many employing very valuable vintage parts.  Recently, I saw a listing of Western Electric 171C output transformers, a part he frequently uses, at a very nice price.  The seller claims that he p...
Let's talk about Silver...
Of course cable choice is both personal taste and system defendant.  My main cable, a 4-meter run from my linestage to my amp is Audio Note Sogon (pure silver litz).  My speaker wire is Sogon as well.  I am considering Sogon or some cheaper Audio ...
Trends in value of vintage / used audio equipment?
blue-green meters behind a smoke glass faceplate--what's not to like in terms of looks?
Trends in value of vintage / used audio equipment?
About the meter craze, I am not a particular fan of meters although my linestage has a meter.  It is actually useful for telling me when the linestage is stable and can be switched to fully on.  But, the real reason it is there is because the buil...
Your journey with lower-watt tube amps -- Can a kit be good enough?
There are not that many tube amp kit sellers these days.  I've heard decent sounding amps from ANK (a company that makes kits based on Audio Note (uk) designs and utilizing a lot of Audio Note-sourced components).  I've also heard nice kit amps fr...
Check This Out!
I heard it at Capital Audiofest and did not know it until reading about it here.  I heard the setup by Gestalt and was really impressed by the sound.  My focus was on the open baffle Cinnamon speaker which sounded fantastic.  I have no idea what t...
Trends in value of vintage / used audio equipment?
Under the presumption that technology improves the performance of the newest gear over anything from the past, and because most buyers put a premium on buying something new (meaning instantaneous depreciation after purchase), all gear lose value q...
Vacuum Tube Preamp for Solid State Power Amp Pairing
I like the MP3 and its big brother too.  But, I don’t recall it coming with remote control.
Vacuum Tube Preamp for Solid State Power Amp Pairing
I am not that familiar with linestages in your price range, but I did notice that some very good vintage ones were mentioned, like the EAR and Hovland.  However, I believe these did not come with remote control.  I think remote control of volume i...
Vacuum Tube Preamp for Solid State Power Amp Pairing
Tube gear tends to vary more in sound than do solid state gear.  Different design, tube types employed, etc. have a bigger impact than differences in parts and design of good solid state gear—an Audio Note linestage will sound very different ...
