How can I tell if I need a better clock for my DAC?
My DAC is an LKS MH-DA004. There’s a thread about this DAC on this forum. Owning a Chinese DAC is a bit of an adventure, but worth it IMO. I believe there are other Chinese DACs out there for less money that also offer extraordinary value. It’s de...
How can I tell if I need a better clock for my DAC?
By my standards, the Cambridge is a fairly expensive (and well-reviewed) unit, but the sound it gives to a Redbook CD doesn’t compete with that of my more modest phono (Technics SL-D2 with a Nagoka MP-110). Can I expect to get comparable sound qu...
How can I tell if I need a better clock for my DAC?
Here is a video I often recommend with a simple explanation of what can go wrong with a digital signal fed into a DAC. It includes the topic of jitter. While discussing the signal passing into the DAC, its principles can also apply to the signal w...
How can I tell if I need a better clock for my DAC?
The issue posed by the OP was about a better clock.  So my response was about clocks. At the current state of the art, a femtoclock, while not a sufficient condition is IMO a necessary condition to the best possible SQ.Also, generally speaking, if ...
How can I tell if I need a better clock for my DAC?
I suppose my response was an "all things being equal" one.  Of course if the rest of the circuit is screwed up, the best jitter clock in the world will be of little use.  So I assumed the circuit was otherwise competently designed and executed.  A...
How can I tell if I need a better clock for my DAC?
In response to the OP, jitter never goes away; in the best DACs it is reduced to a minimum. The best way to keep jitter to a minimum is to see that your component has one of the high quality, high specification, clocks. If it doesn’t, sell it and ...
Newbie Question
FWIW I took a simple laptop that I use for traveling and a 2TB portable hard disk I that my daughter used for a photo course. Ripped all my CDs and SACDs to the hard disk. The hard disk goes into a USB port on the computer; the computer goes by US...
TO BE OR NOT TO BE the user of a record clamp
What made a real difference for me was the use of a peripheral clamp together with a center clamp.  That takes you to another level of clamping!  Great if your TT can take the weight.
D to A converter purchase....
"Read this from MoJo Music:'When a Redbook PCM file is played on a native DSD delta sigma single-bit converter, the single-bit DAC chip has to convert the PCM to DSD in real-time. This is one of the major reasons people claim DSD sounds better tha...
Has Anyone Auditioned an LKS MH-DA004 DAC?
"Jib222, How did your LKS MH-DA 004 DAC modification turn out?"Funny, but I think we’ll never know. This question has been asked since this old thread began. Something seems to have happened to Jib222’s DAC at, or on its way to or from Ric. The la...
aluminum platter vs Acrylic not what I thought
"For whatever it may be worth, I remember distinctly while deep in VPI upgrade madness years ago that HW felt very strongly that the very best platter for the HW19 was the aluminum platter. . . . I was always left with the impression that it was t...
aluminum platter vs Acrylic not what I thought
"The new aluminum plate uses the non inverted bearing."  This appears to be true on the newer, less expensive, TTs with the thinner platters.  "Platter rotates on an oil bath bearing"   Likely too thin to house the inverted bearing.  IIRC it's als...

" VPI has tuned their drive system to specific platter masses and a change to PVC or a composite platter could upset everything."I have not kept up with the most current offerings, but the original Hurst motor that VPI used (whether 600 or 300 rpm...
aluminum platter vs Acrylic not what I thought
lewm,Sorry I appeared so dismissive.  Not my best moment. But people sell modifications for other peoples products all the time.  Look as what Modwright does to an Oppo for ex.  Or, as applied to VPI, look what Phoenix Engineering did, clearly out-...
