Songs of the sea and shanties
For a performer that specializes in sea shanties try Tom Lewis. I've seen him live and he's the real deal. Plays ukelele or concertina and sings traditional and original songs of the sea. Can't say which of his albums are good, but his web site is...
Rippin' CD's
An important consideration is what program is used to rip the CD to your hard drive. Many people feel the best program is EAC, a free program. It can take some tweaking to get it to work right, but it's well worth the effort.Download it fromhttp:/...
I just puked
Another thing to consider is that the original artists often have no say as to whether there work is used for commercials. It depends on who owns the rights at this point. Remember when the formerly black singer Michael Jackson bought the Beatles ...
Your favorite Jazz album - w/in last 5 years
"I'm Beginning To See the Light" by Martin Taylor and David Grisman on Acoustic Disc. Absolutely supurb swinging jazz with great fidelity. Martin Taylor played guitar with Stephanne Grapelli for many years so it's got some of that Django Reinhardt...
RIP Jimmy Knepper
He was a real virtuoso on an instrument much too rare in jazz.
Best acoustic -natural instruments CD's
Most CDs on David Grisman's Acoustic Disc label are extrememly well recorded and feature great, unique performers. Quite a wide selection of interesting music, much of it oriented toward the mandolin.A few are "historical" so not recorded by the l...
Klezmer .. need more
My recent favorite is Les Yeux Noir, who have a strong gypsy slant to their klezmer music. They consist of two brothers who play violin, a cello, plus guitar, bass and drums. If you have a chance, see them live. That is how this music should be he...

Any fellow 'Heads out there?
I'm a long time Dead fan. I ignore them for years at a time, but somehow they just keep sneaking back onto my stereo. In case you don't know, there's a huge archive of live Dead and related shows available for free download at www.gdlive.com .Thes...
Rippin' CD's: What affects sound quality?
The quality of the WAV file will depend on the program used to rip the CD. The one regarded by live concert traders to be the best is Exact Audio Copy, also called EAC. And it happens to be a freebie, though the author does have a "wish list" of i...
Live Jazz Trio Recordings
I love the earlier Ray Brown Trio with the amazing Gene Harris on piano. The Concord release BAM, BAM, BAM comes to mind as a great live one. That group had a real drive with a foundation in blues and gospel. Considering the age of the CD releases...
best way to rip cd files onto computer?
I'll second the suggestion for EAC (Exact Audio Copy). From a sound standpoint, it is the best program for ripping CDs to WAV files. And it's not just cheap, it's free. It may take some adjustements to work on your system, but the results are well...
