DAC suggestions for a reasonably modest system
Appreciate all the input!  Now to see what comes along in the local market (Atlanta area).
DAC suggestions for a reasonably modest system
More excellent choices.  Really appreciate all the input.  I had a friend's Ares II at the house for a few weeks.  It was nearly new, so not quite broken in.  I liked it but at the time I could not consistently choose it over the other DAC in my s...

Thanks for all the responses so far!  You've definitely expanded my field of consideration.

SMSL is a Chinese brand.  The SU-9n was a step up from either of my Schiit Modi DACs (one a multibit, the other a 3E.  At the time I was DAC buying I needed a remote volume, and the SMSL had that feature.  Yes, I'm definitely looking at used DACs ...
Good measuring DACs vs.
I really didn't discover DACs until I started ripping CDs to a NAS.  The improvement vs using the CD player wasn't subtle.  First DAC I bought was an Emotiva.  Impressive thing with a hefty remote control, sounded fine.  Then I bought a Modi Multb...
It's attention, not money, we should budget
As others have said, the choice of speakers matters the most, regardless of relative cost to the whole.  Buying used high end gear at a reasonable fraction of MSRP can change the relative cost/investment proportions quite a bit.  It can take a bit...
Tubed preamps and Power amps- How old is too old???
I have tube amps from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 90s, plus a Had Inspire KT88 just for fun, and tube preamps from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 90s.  They each have been restored to daily driver status, some with upgrades to the original intent, but I haven'...
Anyone Here Ever Purchased A Tube Tester?
I have a TV-7 and 3 other Hickoks.  The only drawback to any of these vs the Amplitrex, Etracer, and Maximatcher is the relatively low plate voltage applied to power tubes is insufficient for matching.  In a recent test of rare 8417 tubes, I used ...
Basic question about sensitivity
As many have posted, the nominal impedance varies with frequency.  Getting lower efficiency speakers to make a sound with a few watts isn't that difficult, but getting the most out of them with insufficient power is.  Nearly all sensitivity rating...
What was the first power cable that you noticed a difference in the sound?
With the exception of my DAC and a VTL power amp, none of my gear has IEC connectors for power cords.  Most of my amps are vintage SS and tube, but a few of the comments regarding power supply reserve as a way of reducing impact of power cords piq...
WHY IS THERE SO MUCH HATE FOR THE HIGH END GEAR ON AUDIO GEAR?
@calvinj  Your comment "people have the right to hate".   Hate is nothing more than a negative response to fear, whether it's fear of someone's appearance or ideas being different (and possibly better than one's own), fear of missing out (sour g...
magnepan
They're very much in business, but like many small manufacturers who focus on high value, moderate cost products, the emphasis is on R&D for new products and making the current ones at a pace that satisfies long term demand.  I'm on my 3rd set...
WHY IS THERE SO MUCH HATE FOR THE HIGH END GEAR ON AUDIO GEAR?
I'm surprised that a dealer would need to ask this question if there's any real selling that takes place in his business.  Human nature dictates that the more comfortable we are with our decisions for everything from stuff to life's forks in the r...
Anyone else using slugs instead of fuses? Comments on metals used and sound please
@thecarpathian  It's not my topic to speculate what else should be considered, but when approximately 1/4" x 1-1/4" of a specific material in the signal or power supply path makes a sonic difference to someone's ears, it's a reasonable question t...
10 gauge power cord. Too much power for tube amp?
The McIntosh model you're using is a monoblock.  A 300 watt tube monoblock.  So if you're turning two of these on at the same time and they're connected to the same 15 amp outlet that might push things a bit, especially if that outlet and its asso...
