What is Tight Bass?
Good speaker placement in a good room will give you tight bass. This is not hyperbole.  I already had what I thought was good, tight bass and moved furniture around and the difference was remarkable. I learned this back when I had Salk Song towe...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
A clean record. I just listened to Journey Escape...a salvation army $1 purchase from 2002. Never sounded like this before. Fresh off my recently acquired VPI record cleaning machine.  I think MC cartridges are sensitive enough to get befuddled ...
No more "High End" for me...Back to Reality Audio
I guess I have been very lucky. I've been quietly combing through this forum for the last few years and it's really helped me at purchase time. I committed to listening before I bought my biggest purchases and it's made a big difference.  Biggest...
Linlai E 6sn7 tubes
I have the Shuguang Treasure 6SN7s on my Don Sachs preamp. Don says in his website that these simply walk away from the holy grail NOS tubes. That's quite a statement. Obviously this is not the case with all NOS tubes...as a lot of the culture th...
MM vs MC Cartridges
Hi,  Before you try KT120s, read up on the Tung Sol 7581A. There's a slight dip in power but has a really balanced presentation with a tad more bass presence and upper end air over the EL34. I have them in my Evo 400 and really love the extra bit...
Advice needed on MC cartridges
I just made a jump from MM to MC. I have a Technics 1200g and have been running Audio Technica VM740ML and VM750SH. These are great sounding MM carts that track well and are quiet in the groove.   For my foray into MC carts, I intended to go rig...

The new West Side Story soundtrack by Gustavo Dudamel. Just got it and it's quite a recording.
Seems like a lot of folks are putting their Primaluna amps for sale...
Some of it is because the Evo line sounds measurably better. I tried the Dialogue Premium and Evo 400 at home and the Evo line was indeed more than a shade better. A lot of smart little details have been added. I have also wanted to trade up. But...
Power Amp Question
Yes, for me, buying a very good preamp was the mightiest game changer. The signal is so small and delicate...screw it up here and it won't matter much how good the amp is. Buying a better amp is usually a modest upgrade.  Want to make a big diff...
To Buy or to DIY, here is my question
@tomic601, Thanks for getting the joke. I knew well that you might actually be more knowledgeable than me when I wrote that...lol.
To Buy or to DIY, here is my question
@tomic601  That construction sounds neat and super complicated. But why would I ever need to build it like that? Because someone else did? Some people will have a tough time building a speaker...I'm not one of those. Nice try kid.
Need speaker recommendations.
Without a picture or drawing, your description is still vague. You haven't told us the width of the wall...only height and depth of the room. There's no description of the room materials so that we might suggest a speaker design that might fit th...
To Buy or to DIY, here is my question
I can build speakers better than any factory. I have a woodshop with excellent tools. But I am slow and most of all plain lazy. I have a design degree too...it's a complete sin. I can afford to buy them so I buy them. But I think you should build...
The Best Preamp is no Preamp?
Bought a Carver TFM amp in the mid 90s. Sounded great with CD player going into it directly. I used the gain knobs on the front panel for each channel as volume knobs. Sounded clean. Sometime around 2008 I bought a new NAD preamp...entry level st...
Great speaker sounds terrible in my room?
I had a room with perfect sound once. Then I moved. Took all I learned from that room into the new one. I have good sound now. But not like that room. It was a near perfect listening room. What made it so great? Without a doubt the acoustic ceil...
