Jazz for aficionados
Mary Halvorson had 2 great releases in 2022. Her 2nd, is Belladonna. It is more in the chamber-jazz mode. She is a pretty creative musician.
Jazz for aficionados
Guitarist, Mary Halvorson - Amaryliss One of the best jazz releases of 2022. Progressive, but not avant-garde.
What to listen for?
@stuartk I don’t go out of my way to focus on such details-- it’s not "what I listen for" -- but whatever floats your boat...   For me, if a system is able to reproduce these types of details (chair squeaks, papers moving, etc), it is also a...
I just discovered Van Der Graff Generator...
Big VDGG fan here! Dark, brooding, intense, excellent musicianship, complex, thoughtful lyrics. All brought together by Hammill’s ’pour you emotional guts out’ style of singing. As far as I'm concerned, they stand up to the quality of most other...
New In 2023
My list will be fairly obscure, with mostly progressive, experimental and avant-garde leaning bands and material.  So, YMMV... I will be back with even more. 2023 has started out pretty strongly for progressive genres of music (jazz, rock, class...
50 years of Hip Hop- How Come?
@garebear  ........wait just a minute here. Please tell me that some of you are not actually comparing great jazz musicians to Hip Pop Rappers ? Please tell me that you aren't even considering this. I am right there with you on this. The level...
50 years of Hip Hop- How Come?
@ghasley  I was wondering how long it would take for someone to adjust the eyeholes on their hood and see this thread…..   I wonder how many people on this thread who don't like rap or hip hop, love jazz? Do believe those of us who dislike h...
50 years of Hip Hop- How Come?
Old white guys discussing rap and hip hop. Hilarious. What’s the problem with that? Just because I am white, does not mean I can not criticize music based on the things I don’t like about it, musically. I dislike country about as much as r...
50 years of Hip Hop- How Come?
@ghasley  You want to hear an almost perfect belnding of all of these genres (soul, r&b, jazz, blues, funk, rap, hip-hop) then listen to Robert Glasper’s “Black Radio” albums. His latest “Black Radio III” is brilliant. The musicianship is ex...
50 years of Hip Hop- How Come?
Not a fan at all. But my dislike is based purely on the music itself. I tend to only like music that has most or all of the following attributes: Very high levels of musicianship, musical complexity, deep and broad range of emotional and/or int...
Great Small Room Speakers for $3-5k
I would highly recommend checking out Andrew Jones new speaker he designed for MoFi, the SourcePoint 10. At $3700, they are somewhat of a giant killer. Jones is one of the best speaker designers around.
What are your top three favorite classical compositions?
As it appears most folks like orchestral,     My list is mostly orchestral, only because those are the pieces that come to mind first. But truth be told, there are plenty of pieces for chamber ensembles that I rate equally as those in my lis...
Who says studio monitors are "cold and analytical"?
The contention that since studio monitors are used in a studio, they must be super accurate is not correct. Engineers use them as tools, and each individual engineer has specific things they want to hear. In fact, they will often switch between m...
Favourite Guitarists
Plenty more could go on either of these lists. Prog: Steve Hackett Steve Hillage Steve Howe Robert Fripp Franco Mussida (Italian prog great) Gabriel Federow and James Mac Gaw (from Magma) Fred Frith (from avant-prog band, Henry Cow) Jazz: Alla...
