Vibration Control It always has a positive effect, the key question is how much does it improve the sound you hear and how much does it cost and are you willing to spend. Anyone who denies it either is just plain stubborn of cannot hear properly. Or maybe their equ...
Half-Speed Masters - are they worth double dipping? IME 45's always sound better than their 33 versions, all things being equal. They are not equal however. There is more care taken in the production of the 45s as they are more expensive and typically use better vinyl. my 45s are the best sounding ...
Auditioning Used Equipment - Am I crazy ? @greenngoldcheesehead - I would call them. Some people, especially old time stereo guys are not very responsive on email. I can't imagine that if they are a dealer of the brand you're looking at that they wouldn't have any of their models on displ...
Auditioning Used Equipment - Am I crazy ? Did you ask him how he thought it would compare to what you have and what you are looking to improve with a switch? If you are just in the auditioning stage, he isn't in business to audition that brand. If it a great deal, he probably thinks it wi...
What was the most expensive record that you ever bought ? Beatles MOFI collection brand new when it came out 40 or so years ago for about $250. Would never sell it....Probably worth $1500-$2000 in the NM condition it is in. My Dark Side or Set Pepper UHQRs may be worth in that range and only paid $35-40...
Solid State Power Amps Jeff Rowland and Plinius come to mind
Do you belong more to souce first or to speakers first school of thought ? There is theory and there is practicality. Linn's theory is correct, but to maximize your investment, you'd want a well matched system. There's no point in arguing for a $1000 front end and $100K speakers or vice versa. So much is based on the room.
Would you move to a bigger house if you could just to have a better listening room ? I agree with @feldmen4 and that ilk. I rarely "just" listen to an album. I could be eating or cooking in the adjacent open layout kitchen or watching sports on a muted TV or reading. My total open space is about 15x30, but not an ideal listening s...
Quandary If they are that confident that it will sound better, let them get the one they recommend and bring it over. Hearing a different amp is of no value. I assume this is an expensive amp. I had a guy tell me that a tonearm would be a huge improvement ...
Vinyl Only Magical Mystery Tour - Flying and Blue Jay Way - luckily they are consecutive so I only have to lift the arm once. Pat Metheny Group -Barcarole on Offramp which is otherwise an exceptional album Lucky there also since it is the first track. Too ...
Listening Room +1 KEF. I have the R500s that were a steal on close out a few years ago and to get a meaningful improvement I would have to spend probably 3-4 times as much and then would not have the very condensed thin tower 42" height footprint that I like, th...
How often, and how, do you clean your stylus? Good old discwasher stylus brush as needed. Gently wipe a bit of Mofi stylus on the brush with a brush that comes with the solution. Probably end of doing it once or twice a month. After brushing the brush with fluid it is absorbed so as not to be...
Tonearm resonance where is @mijostyn when you need him?
Anyone listen to entire albums? Only records and almost always completely through unless listening time is over or there is a song I can't stand - luckily very few out of about 350 records. Double albums are the only potential exception. If I have had enough for a while, I will...
Music first or sound first? Music is most important, and the best is when the stereo enables you to hear more of it or hear it better. There is nothing better than noticing something in a song or album you've listened to hundreds of times that you never heard before. I can ... |
