Streamer Advice: Bluesound Node 2 vs Aries Mini vs Oppo
Hi, bomd,The Oppo 103 is not the same as the Oppo 105 when comparing sound quality; the 105 is a better player. I have a 103 and it's fine as a CD transport but the sound quality of its internal DAC is not as good compared to the internal DAC of a...
The Devil is in the Cartridge Setup (and a good phone pre)...
Hi, jbhiller,I'm wondering why you decided to increase VTF to the ART9's maximum recommended setting? I've found that the optimum for LOMC cartridges is usually in the mid-range of the recommendation, the ART9 included. Just curious.Regards,Tom
Could I make use of a DAC with my setup?
Well, I ended up buying two Node 2 units, one for the small stereo in the living room and one for the basement stereo room. If you're not wanting to spend the extra money you could look into one of the less expensive Pi players. I believe you can ...
Could I make use of a DAC with my setup?
Hi, forsooth,Not intending to confuse things but here’s another option you may want to consider...I was doing something similar to your situation with my laptop and desktop/main stereo systems and got tired of changing connections each time so I b...
Which subwoofers have at least a 20k input impedance as required for ARC preamp
What about a buffer stage in front of the sub amp? You can find tube buffers with >100k Ohm input impedance.Regards,Tom
Shiit Loki
I wonder if some of the improvements people are hearing is due to the Loki Mini’s input and output impedances (47K Ohms and 75 Ohms respectively) benefitting the preamp/integrated amp. It’s acting like a buffer stage. Maybe.Tom
Record’s physical design properties
Ah, ha; a vinyl tweak that worked. ’-)The shape of the groove is determined by the cutting lathe stylus so there is a specific stylus alignment that best traces that cut. The alignment of the stylus in the groove is determined by a combination of ...

Record’s physical design properties
Hi, kalali,Here are two web pages that include "Personal Notes on Record Specifications". (I’m not exactly sure who the author is.)http://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~yosh/recspecs.htmhttp://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~yosh/vta.htmThe pages are somewhat difficul...
My turntable hates Cat Stevens
I have experienced resonance distortion with Dynavector cartridges. I've had a DV-20XL and a Karat 17D3, both installed on a Pro-Ject 9 (aluminum) tonearm and a SME 309 tonearm, and with certain LPs with high energy vocals they seemed to have trou...
gain switch and volume control position
Hi, Mark,Sounds like the gain is just about right either way.Regards,Tom
Full detailed sound at 30 - 40 - 50 dB
leemaze, Good to hear your Loki mini is working out. I moved my Loki mini to the main stereo system for a week just to see what it can do and when I put the Loki back into the smaller system it was a night and day improvement. Sometimes it takes a...
Reducing Background Noise On Records
Hi, cspiegs,I don’t know anything about using a DBX expander but reading the manual it seems like a sophisticated tone control. You may be able to reduce the volume level of the frequencies associated with "noise" but you’re also reducing the outp...
Full detailed sound at 30 - 40 - 50 dB
I second wolf_garcia’s suggestion; the Schiit Loki Mini would work really well as a "loudness" switch. Set the desired attenuation/gain for each tone control level for quiet listening and then you can use the bypass switch to go "straight wire" wh...
Somehow I've got myself a "WTF" dilema with my newly setup Turntable. HELP!
Hi, markj941,The JD9 uses dip switches for left and right channels for gain; check to be sure that the dip switches are set to the correct position for each channel.Regards,Tom
