I'm new to Step Up Transformers Do I get a prize when I hit 1,000 comments? Maybe a free guided tour of every linear inch of my audio circuitry, perhaps?
I'm new to Step Up Transformers I have a Pro-ject Tube Box DS2, an external phono stage that I run through my tuner line stage on my preamp. Yeah it’s weird but it works fabulously.
Is it the gear or the ears? Ear or the gear? Incomplete question. It is the brain. You train the brain to listen. The ears do the mechanical work. If the brain is adept, it compensates for failing mechanics as we age (I just took a hearing test 3 months ago. My ENT/audiol...
What actually determines volume power? Is it watts? I agree with the comments that there is an equation here: amplifier output / speaker efficiency, and that speaker efficiency usually matters more. My Altec 604Cs are 101db, 16 ohms. That’s way more efficient than most stuff being made today.
Replace tubes yearly? @brianlucey ”…if you didn’t notice, then everything is fine.” This is not true. Parts slowly deteriorate. Some of that deterioration can cause a slow moving degradation in sound over a number of years. You don’t really notice. Then one day a pa...
Replace tubes yearly? I have been using tubes for 56 years so you would think that might make me an authority but I will make no such claim. Just my experiences, these are what they are: I used a Dyna Stereo 70 and the Dyna MK IIIs for 17 years. The tubes tended to la...
A great has died I met Levon Helm at the groundbreaking for Bethel Woods (site of Woodstock) back in the early 00s. Lovely person, he passed a decade ago? His wife still runs his semi-outdoor music venue, Levon Helms Studio. I’ve seen Richard Thompson, the Gypsy K...

Qualified service technicians disappearing! Recommendations wanted Has anyone suggested Soundsmith? He doesn’t just build and repair cartridges. He does all sorts of gear as well. Caveat: He can be a little prickly, and he’s not cheap.
Beware, scammers everywhere There was a seller in an audio forum that had a product that I was very very very much interested in. He had good feedback from forum members, no negatives. He would accept only payment by wire transfer…to Turkey,…and he was in the Netherlands. Al...
Declare the correct value on the Customs form? I used to send my Koetsu cartridges to Van den Hul for retipping. We declared the value of the retipping work, not of the cartridge itself, and kept my fingers crossed that nothing would happen. I’d ship in a box that was 12 x 14 x 4, with lots of...
Who positions their speakers straight ahead (zero tow in) and why. As others have noted, every experience is different. Here is mine for what it is worth: - room is semi anechoic: rock wool covers the walls (6”) and ceiling (14”), with fire resistant burlap covering that - rugs cover most of the floor - room h...
Equalizer in a Hi Fi system I believe that i previously said that I used to use a top of the line DBX equalizer. I no longer need it since my room is completely treated and is semi-anechoic. I will be putting it on eBay soon, or if you are interested, you can reach out t...

Anyone read this NYT story about analog audio bars? I’ve gone to a few. The experiences vary. some are really focused on the listening. Others on the vibe and the social experience. My own room compares favorably, with a fraction of the hardware expenditure. i lived in nyc for 45 years I move ... |
