Why does USB feature so much in discussions about DACs when the newer HDMI seems better?
I don't have much invested in my digital front end, I'm mainly a vinyl guy, but the I2s connection made a noticeable improvement in performance using a DDC from a player via usb and outputting I2s into the DAC. The player has an I2s output as well...
Would you buy a tube amp if you were unable to use vintage tubes in it ?
@wmr57- my doppelgänger--you still using the Allnic phono pre? I rolled a bunch of rectifiers in that, finding the sweetspot for me, given my system voicing, to be the GEC U-52 cup base. I have a metal base Mullard (really a Philips-Miniwatt from ...
Would you buy a tube amp if you were unable to use vintage tubes in it ?
@bigtwin I think the answer was supposed to be the transistor but I've been around long enough to remember how much better the ARC SP3 preamp sounded than its solid state competition in the early-mid '70s. And, insofar as tube manufacture is conce...
Would you buy a tube amp if you were unable to use vintage tubes in it ?
I'd ask the opposite question- does the unit sound good with a modern production tube? Good old stock is depleted and pricey- yeah, I run them but it gets harder to source replacements. And in my experience, there is a big difference in sound amon...
Desperate to Get Back to Horns
One speaker that you might explore is the Pure Audio Project Trio. It has a pretty dominating appearance, is open baffle, can be set up with a variety of midrange drivers, upgrades, etc. Apparently very efficient though may be a little bass shy. S...
About Koetsu Rosewood
I wouldn’t begrudge @ghdprentice for his choice of phono stage or its price, we all have different approaches and budgets. The better question to me is what arm is being used with the Koetsu given the low compliance of the cartridge. You are going...
About Koetsu Rosewood
I don’t know if Audiogon supports images; I always post images here from a third party source, either my own website, or a third party hosting site (some of which, like Flickr, are pretty good and free for a substantial number of images).  Someon...
Is my Dynaco Stereo 400 worth repairing for resale?
I had a Dyna 400 that was a factory build, roughly 1973 as I recall. I got an accommodation since I worked part time in an audio store. I liked the idea of the "Dynaguard" (running from memory here), it performed well. I swapped it out for an orig...
ARC Select Worth Price?
I have no idea what an ARC select is (other than assuming it is targeted to that company in Minnesota that WZJ started) but my experience with the 6h30 in a Veloce line stage was that the new production tube could not reproduce the full harmonic e...
Koetsu back...kind of.
@rsf507 said "nice scam by this company, just another money grab." To me, the more interesting question is who was actually making the cartridges when Sugano the Younger was still with us.
Koetsu back...kind of.
I’m fascinated by this. On the one hand, I agree with @neonknight-- there had to be more than the aged son behind the company’s production process. And it would be nice if the cartridges were once again available. I cannot even begin to speculate ...
Get yer Alice at Axpona
Love it to Death is one of the great rock guitar albums. I went through the tortures of the damned to find an early "Straight" label (Zappa imprint for Warners) pressing that wasn't trashed. Record is collectible b/c of the cover. I must have twel...
Jethro Tull
For me, Stand-Up. I have a UK "bulls-eye" pressed at Orlake in mint condition that I got before some of these records got pricey.  Thanks to Ian Anderson's generosity, I was able to interview him for my website several years ago, focusing largely...
5ar4 rectifier tube
My Allnic phono stage uses this rectifier and I’ve rolled a bunch, including the GEC U52 (both brown and black base) and the Mullard metal base (really a Philips-Miniwatt, Holland), as well as various bakelite Mullards and a bunch of others.  The...
Considering switching to XLR cables,
In my experience, a reputable dealer will often let you try different cables so you can determine sonic preferences for yourself. Yes, there are some known synergies. I had a slew of different "high end" cables in the house that I owned when I beg...
