Why do Tube Amps sound more romantic v SS amps Harmonic distortion. "Golden age" studio outboard has made a major comeback in the post digital era as engineers try to put back what they lost from analogue tape in terms of distortion.. Its way more complex than that but, and forgive the genera...
Are advances in technology making speakers better? @op - you would be far better off spending the price difference on upgrading the rest of your signal chain than going from D3 to D4 B&Ws. If you are thinking about Magico, you should also listen to Wilson and Borresen for further points of co...
Best sounding CD player The Esoteric K01 XD is a superb player. Sound wise, it simply sounds more natural than anything else I've heard from standalone players. I get the impression that Esoteric doesn't have as much market presence in the US as it has in Europe and Asia.
Are advances in technology making speakers better? If one likes the quite processed sound quality of B&W speakers, their various design iterations have been getting better. If one doesn't, they've been getting worse. Better spanners don't necessarily make a better mechanic.
Is the seated-centered solo listening to music a dated tech? The absence of punctuation in the OP caused me reading fatigue:)) Aside from that, if the music in question is pretty much any genre outside of acoustic music, recorded since the 1970's, what we are listening to is, in fact "the sound field as it...
Audio Research - should I replace the valves? OP. As you are in the UK, Watford Valves have a good stock of 6550s for your power amp. It looks like Tubeamp doctor in Germany has 6H30s - for your pre and driver valves in your power amps. The latter are not massively common and are Russian, s...
Pass labs upgrade path I think an XP22 is the best upgrade option. You will need to go to an XP32 to better it. Depending on how much power you need, it's worth listening to the XA power amps before you upgrade your existing power amp.
Speaker placement in a room with the best performance if it is close to a wall? OP. What constitutes not a large distance from the wall? Specifically, what are the dimensions of the room length and width wise? For absolute clarity - what is the distance from the front wall - location of your speakers to the back wall - situat...
Pass Then vs. Pass Now I don't have experience of the Gibbon but have experience of the O96 with Passlabs amps. The .8 series are superb power amps. As per a previous poster, I would certainly look at selling the Rogue in favour of an XP12 pre. That is a very nice sound...
Tube preamp options If you want depth, a Jadis JP80MC will deliver. There's a slim chance you would find one secondhand for your budget, but you potentially could also eliminate your phono stage as the Jadis phono stage is superb.
Ultrasonic record cleaners The Degritter is an absolutely superb machine - both functionally and in its overall design. I've found it to make a phenomenal improvement to the sound of my records - not just in terms of removing surface noise. My records have always been very ...
Things I don‘t know On Clocks Very few DAC manufacturers e.g. Esoteric and DCS, make their own clocks and most manufacturers don’t want you going off and buying someone else’s product. That’s aside from the fact that digital designers do differ in their views of the...
What is the Best Sounding Stand Mount Speaker in the world? Wilson Maxx - but you need a big stand. On a more serious note, the Borresen 01 is the best sounding stand mount speaker I have listened to.
The Beatles Revolver Looking afresh at any recording doesn't detract from the original. Aside from the technology involved here any album mix that involves multitracking of any kind (even four track) is representative of a set of views at a point in time. Other perspe...
Don’t over power condition! It is easy to get carried away with power conditioning devices on the basis that more is better. More is not always better especially if devices from different manufacturers are used. |
