Receivers 500 and under?
I haven't heard the Outlaw products, but in my experience the Marantz line clearly outshines the other mass-market Japanese brands including Yamaha and Sony.
To Bi or not to Bi? That is the question
Just a note: It is very important to as closely match the gain of two dissimilar amps as is possible for this method to stand a chance of working correctly.
Do cables age or become too old at any point?
It should probably be pointed out that the corrosion visible through a clear jacket maybe wasn't caused by the jacket itself, but was the result of such an old cable's having been made using copper that was not pure by today's standards. My head h...
Your choice of EL34's
Well, I didn't mean to give the impression that I find Albert's pursuit of the best possible sound snobbish. But I do think that the high-end industry as a whole, and the NOS tube sub-industry, does drive its marketing and pricing strategies, in p...
Your choice of EL34's
Albert, I'm sure you've listened to many tubes that I never will, but I suspect that if I could, I might only somewhat disagree with you in degree, not in kind. I do not at all dispute that tubes can greatly affect the quality of the sound, and th...
Do cables age or become too old at any point?
I have seen and heard for myself what Sean describes about oxidation over time that is visible through a clear PVC jacket, and the degradation is quite audible. I imagine that this eventually happens to a greater or lesser degree with any cable. B...
Your choice of EL34's
Getting back to tubes the average audiophile could actually find, hear, and buy without being independently wealthy, an inveterate risk-taking junky, or possessing an advanced degree in ancient audio esoterica: The Svetlana's are the best new EL-3...
Why SACD,DVD-A are already DEAD
In the digital age, new formats are born to die. The hardware and software (music) industries are working at cross-purposes. Movies now drive the hardware, ownership protection the software. The average music consumer just wants affordability, por...
Buying Dealer Demos
Dennis refers to demo gear being 5 years old as a "nightmare" - again, I don't see anything shockingly different between this and a typical item purchased used here on the 'Gon. Just like asking a fellow member how old the unit they're selling is ...
Buying Dealer Demos
Also worked in a shop once upon a time, definitely agree with Mar00 on the playing time issue (not that I think this really matters very much) - my speakers at home get a lot more daily playing time on average than any one thing did back in the st...
Buying Dealer Demos
Your concerns would in theory apply equally to any used product, not just dealer demo's, so maybe we should be surprised to find you on the A-Gon! Seriously though, if they sound fine (with an ear to each driver) and look fine (with the grilles of...
Digitizing LPs: General advice wanted
Despite some of the subsequent responses, I believe the original poster is trying only to archive the material in 24/96, not make CD's for convenient playback. If this is the case, it's not something I know much about, but maybe a trip to a pro so...
Axiom M22 vs Triangle Titus + other 500 ramblings
Try to see if you can listen to a used pair of Snell E's (small floorstanders, circa mid-90's), which should sell for well within your budget. Very articulate and neutral, and I think better balanced overall at their size and price than the larger...
Do "Tube Rings" really work?
SD, let me see if I can give the "objective" pro argument for why tube damping devices MAY make a positive difference. You note that if a preamp is well-isolated this should take care of any potential problem. The mechanical aspect can be handled ...
Cardas replacement cord for Sennheiser HD-600
DW, I've been considering trying the Cardas out with my 600's. Could you (and anyone else who's done it) possibly post a specific description of what you heard, before and after the swap? Thanks!
