Audiophile Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cable recommendations?

I'm a composer engaged in audiophile recordings of an excellent grand piano.  I just upgraded a Lynx Hilo 1 USB interface AD/DA converter to a Hilo 2 Thunderbolt 3 interface AD/DA converter.  I tried the Thunderbolt cables I have on hand (Sonnet Thunderbolt 3, Apple Thunderbolt 3, and Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable), and in my signal chain (Josephson mics, Avalon Design mic preamp, AudioQuest Fire .5 m XLR interconnects as mic and preamp cables), the Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable sounded best -- but I'm wondering if I can do better.  From prior experience with the Hilo 1 USB (type B port) and trying multiple USB cables in the same signal chain above, I found the AudioQuest Diamond B to C USB cable sounded best.  Unfortunately AudioQuest doesn't make a Thunderbolt cable (although they do make a USB C to C cable, which I'll try if I can), and I looked extensively on the internet but couldn't find any audiophile Thunderbolt 3 or 4 cables.  Can any of you help?

Thanks, and warm regards,

Tom

Hi Tom, I have the same question regarding the connection between a Mac Pro and DAW for recording. Did you find a quality Thunderbolt 3 cable that you can recommend?

Thank you.

Lee

Hi, Lee.  I'm glad to share what I've discovered.  The best I found -- which is also a relative great bargain compared to audiophile cables -- is the Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable (which is backwards compatible with Thunderbolt 3, and is better than Thunderbolt 3 cables) [P.S. The current version appears to be the Apple Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable - $69 - which I now may want to try].  I consider this a peer with two other cables configurations that I'm testing for each recording, since each configuration yields slightly different sonic characteristics, the choice being aesthetic -- the best fit for the piece being recorded.  My default, first preference most of the time seems to be the Lynx Hilo 2 with the USB card installed, with a Revelation Audio Prophecy dual conduit cable (single connectors, USB B to USB C).  The second preference is the Lynx Hilo 2 with the Thunderbolt card installed, with the Apple Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable;  this is a close competitor to the first configuration, but the first is the most detailed, open, and dimensional of my options (under my circumstances).  The third preference is the Lynx Hilo 2 with the USB card installed, with an AudioQuest Diamond B to C USB cable, which is excellent but has a somewhat darker, very evenly balanced sound -- which sometimes is definitely preferable.  (I had a Lynx Hilo 1 with a USB card since 2013, and collected the USB cables over the years;  last year I upgraded to a Lynx Hilo 2 with a Thunderbolt card, and still having the Hilo 1 I was able to put that card in the Hilo 2 and compare the configurations mentioned above.  As a result, I decided to sell the Hilo 1 with its USB card and purchased a new USB card to use with the HIlo 2, which I enthusiastically recommend.)  Best regards, Tom
