can you play a gold record?

OK so I am an analog Newb, but can you actually play a gold or Platinum record? I would think this would destroy the stylus....or is there even anything actually "cut" to the album to play?

They are pretty cool to look at and I was thinking.... you know... I wonder if I could play one of these.
