Do you play any...?

Somewhere on this website there's a well-posted thread on this subject. Some admit to having little or no history or expertise on a musical instrument. Some have lots. The trouble is, the thread's title doesn't give much of a clue about all those posts. Now...if I only had the mental skills to find it...

 I can play a mean kazoo...

When I was a child, my mom took us to watch this guy named Van Cliburn.   Needless to say, I was hooked.  I believe I was 5 years old.  From there I dove into my parents and grandparents vinyl and found a record from Clyde McCoy, "Sugar Blues".  Wow, such diversity in sounds.  Took piano for 5 years, and in my humble opinion, I am not good at all and basically suck.  There was a guy at college that wanted to learn to play piano and asked that I show him what I knew.  Two weeks later he asked me to listen to him and he had far surpassed my ability.  I believe you either have it or you don't.  However, that doesn't diminish my love of music.  Ability and love are 2 different things.  I have found I have a great ear, there is just some disconnect in the brain in any attempt to reproduce or create music. 

I play the Radio, but not well

Trumpet, guitar, percussion and trombone. Grandfather played clarinet in Tommy Dorsey and Dina Shores bands in the 40’s then as Grandma said along came a war.

Here goes --

Steel string acoustic guitar. Definitely the instrument where I got chops. I have several axes. All good quality. I'm a finger-picking fool... A pretty fair Bluegrass flat picker, as well.

Electric guitar. Fifteen years ago I'd be screaming out Clapton licks. I also did my share of boing-de-boing Rockabilly and angry Punk Rock down-stroking..

Violin/Fiddle. Three of them. I work like crazy on the beasts. Am I beginning to get good? Some say yes. Some say no.

Piano. A lovely old Mason-Hamlin upright in a room off the garage. I was a pretty good rock/jazz/classical player until the fiddle entered my universe and led me astray.

My Dad had a Hammond C3 with Leslie. I took lessons in grammar school and got to a rudimentary William Tell Overture (Lone Ranger theme).

Then gave up. I was just not able to keep playing after I hit a wrong note.

Played the acoustic guitar. Not well.

Played the cornet. Pretty well.

All in the past...

 I don’t play any instruments.    I’ve tried to teach myself guitar a couple times. I just didn’t have the dexterity.   I’m about 60,and at this point ,my hands are shot. Some mornings it’s a bit of a struggle to button my shirt.  However,I absolutely love music,and the best reproduction I can afford. 

Guitar and piano for me learned as a kid we are a musical family and it is a real joy.  I highly recommend parents get their children into musical education music lessons or being part of the school band.

I haven't played a gig in years.  At the very most, I sit on the porch and serenade the neighbors walking their dogs. And oh yeah, I also play an Old Time open-back banjo.

Use to play (guitarist) cover bands and little higher grade jazz blues/fusion with friends mpls years ago.Still play everyday but my attendance at the local blues jams,ect has tapered off since covid...want to start up again but things have changed so much out there.Some not for the better...Ugh!
