How our external ear changes available sound

I was just relaxing and listening to A Pillow of Winds by Pink Floyd.  Eyes closed hands behind my head elbows out.  I thought sounded especially good which I chalked up to eyes closed.

It soon became apparent and demonstrable for me that the sound was better  with the reflections of my arms and ears pushed out from my head a little.

I suffer! from severe tinnitus in my left ear.  Around 3700 Hz best I can measure with my phone tone generator.  Right ear still great.  Just setting the stage.

The improvement was better treble. Imaging seemed to stay the same.  Enough to where I would take the increased clarity over imaging decrease.

So then I actually started to deform my ears manually.  Very interesting to me.  Frequency response could be changed by pulling tops of ears down vs cupping the whole ear inward.

Given loudness can be confused for a better sound how much better of a sound I am actually hearing?

Being as how I'm getting old are my ears getting flat against my head and degrading my hearing?

I look forward to your reponse.

You may want to experiment with different “spacers” behind the back of your ear.  I have used folded pipe cleaners, straws, and pencil erasers.  It’s all about the information that goes to your brain, right?

Wasn't the name of those leather ear "extenders" from long ago "Serious Listeners"?

I think you are right. Somewhere I remember a drawing from, maybe the 1800's.
