I’ve been a long time fan of the Shunyata brand of cables. One of the rare real science audiophile cable makers, with relatively speaking reasonable prices also.
Shunyata has always turned away from silver. All these years of upgrading their lines...first came the helix virtual tube copper conductors, then the vtx conductors ( simpler virtual tubes) , then the revolution ary Ztron circuit eliminating skin lost of signal, then the even more revolutionary noise reduction circuits.
I’ve followed Caelin journey and numerous posts on forums. He always sweared they tried silver conductors and it never came as a solution to better sound compared to their premium copper. Never. And he also always sweared by their vtx air core surrounded by copper conductors.
And now what, their new line of reference power cables uses what.... SILVER conductors !??? And guess what, they decided to put them inside the virtual air core of the vtx conductors....which are not really vtx conductors anymore when you objectively realise the truth.....because they filled the empty air core with a darn isolated silver wire !!...
I really think Shunyata have lost it this time... The logic in their science is no more. My two cents. A long time customer, now very perplex about their choices.
The logic in their science never was. I met the guy, was there at the start, have some of his cables. Not to single him out as they are all like this to some extent- they all know everyone wants a story, as otherwise they have to learn to hear, which is hard. The last story anyone wants to hear is the true one, that they really have no clue just wild guesses and theories they try out and the vast majority of which fail. Which is what I have been saying for like 20 years at lest, probably closer to 30, and that is how I know for dead certain nobody wants to hear the truth.
Now their "logic in their science" narrative is shattered, it should be clear as anything there never was any science... and yet my bet is still you choose the Kool-aid over the truth. Well if its any consolation you are not alone.
Former military scientist? I’m not sure I would have opened with that. Nevertheless...
“Shunyata Research was founded by former military scientist Caelin Gabriel in 1997 with the goal of designing power-line and cable systems that eliminate the deleterious effect noise has on high resolution sound, film, recording and mastering systems. Guided by Gabriel’s use of measurement, innovative science and his many patents, Shunyata has grown to become one of the most highly regarded manufacturers in the audio/video industry. This unparalleled success has grown to include a medical and science based product division named Clear Image Scientific. Shunyata’s sister company CIS designs and manufactures noise-reduction products for scientific laboratories, heart surgery and all applications that require the highest resolution of low-level signals and images.“
techno_dude, you know this how? May we please know your technical background? I don’t think ‘a long time customer’ hardly a qualification to form such a ridiculous opinion.
So why did you decided to ‘pick’ on Shunyata and not other manufacturers currently using Silver. Do you have a scientific proof to believe that Silver is not suitable conductor?
Your rant sounds more like a regret of not knowing Shunyata is coming out with silver cables. Did you recently upgraded your cables and now wished you could have waited?
Silver gets a bad rap. It must be broken in for a long time, it must be cryogenically treated. And it must be controlled for directionality. Any questions raise your hands.
Is the ridiculous opinion that the "logic in their science is no more", or that the logic in their science was never there, and they have just, inadvertently admitted it?
I don't get it. The OP is upset because a cable manufacturer who previously never used silver in its cables has changed its designs and now uses silver?
Unfortunately, that seems to be the gist of the post. Shunayata has never used any science either. I imagine their Medical customers will be chagrined to find this out.
I too was surprised to find that they were using silver. So what?
I believe it's live and learn, and not be to proud to admit it. That's progress.
Second, somebody's got to try the stuff...Why not you? Well not you, you don't seem to happy about new product design, and progress, and, and , and. What are you upset about, come to think of it.?

So that was the goal, eh? Huh.
Well so much for the narrative. Now here's the truth. My audio mentor Stewart Marcantoni had Weekend Environments, back then the largest Synergistic dealer in the US. I'm in Redmond, Stewart and Caelin are across the Puget Sound in Bremerton. Caelin is just starting out and brings one of his early power cords over to see what Stewart thinks.
They plug it in and after a minute or so Caelin says well, what do you think? $750? Stewart says nothing, just goes and plugs in another power cord. Which sounds much better. "Wow! What is that? $1100? $1200??"
$300. Oh. Back to the drawing board.
This is almost verbatim. Its all about the Benjamins.
The quote you’re thinking of wasn’t his. A quote that was his is, “most people would be much better off if they believed in too much rather than too little.“
This may be asking too much, too complicated, or nuanced, but charging a lot for something, having it be based on science (or not), and being of value, are all completely separate issues. I realize how much fun it is to pretend its all one big bowl of oatmeal. But its not.
