Who recommended them? Just curious.

The problem is not finding a quality tweeter but finding one that will work with the existing crossover. The Scanspeak Revelator is a better tweeter but how it would sound is anyones guess. I remember when I was looking at a pair of these a couple of years ago I noticed that the tweeters were no longer available. Avalon told me then that they were looking for an alternative; did they recommend the ones you bought? Can you have the damaged ones rebuilt? If they don't know of an alternative you are in deep doodoo. Going active might be the only solution if there is no tweeter that can work with the existing crossover. |
Sorry to hear about this and my response will not help. You will see from my threads here on audiogon.....I had a pair of the Eclipse's for over 10 years and bought them demo from a dealer. Loved those speakers....and really without dropping allot of money listened to other speakers but still kept my Avalon Eclipse's. I had discussed the Eclipse's with Lucian at Avalon many times - and I believe it was one of their best efforts and also designed by Charles Hanson who is now at Ayre. There was something about that sealed enclosure. Anyway, when I heard that that Avalon no longer had replacement tweeters and they did not have a '' work around '' in place, I sold my Eclipse's here on Auduogon last fall. Not because I WANTED to, but I felt that I had to because if one of those tweeters went, they would make awfully big book ends or door stops....pre-emptive on my part, yes, but I got $3,000 and mine were in MINT shape. Fantastic speakers and too bad Avalon does not have a replacements ( although, they once did and obviously they are now gone ) as I would have definitely have kept mine. Stanwal is correct, in that any replacement would have to match with the existing crossover..... good luck and wish you the best ! |

Scatlett - I know that my original post did not add any resolution to your sitaution, only to hopefully bring to light a problem that Avalon may someday address - and also, the compulsion for others to constantly offer no insight to the original posters questions or situations.....as the person who did buy my speakers the situation with the tweeters was fully disclosed.....and as Avalon will tell you, the tweeters can last a lifetime under the corect use. The only other option as I thought about it....was that the Eclipse's do come up for sale here on Audiogon and even on E-Bay from time to time and possibly buy a second pair as a back up. I really liked that speaker. I also know that the same tweeter was used in the Asscents which is / was also an amazing speaker. |
Scatlett, check with Bill Legall, Miller Sound. If there is a solution for your Eclipse speaker issue, Bill will know. More information about Bill: http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/roadtour13/roadtour13.html . |
I was ready to buy a pair of them knowing that the tweeter situation was in flux but the owner decided to keep them. As long as you reveal the circumstances the decision is up to the buyer. I have had two tweeters go out out of at least a couple of hundred speakers so there is a good chance there will never be any problem. |
...thank you Stanwal, as I feel no need to defend selling them with the tweeter situation....as you and I might have spoke back then when I was selling them.....however, it still irrates me that people who were not privey to the sale, need to interject their opinion and reveal their ignorance. I actually just spoke with the buyer of my Eclipse's about 3 months ago on a different topic and all is well........enough said and as always said people behind computers have what I call ; '' beer muscles '' ...... |
