Where did you find info about Ref 3? the Audio Research site does not have any mention of it yet.

Well that must explain why there has been a whole lotta Ref 2's for sale lately! I was wondering it was due to the latest Bose Wave radio that now extends down another half octave!

Jokes asides, the specs sound very impressive. At least on the page referred, the price seems the same 10K as Ref 2 Mk.2: I hope this is real and not an oversight from the site's owner.
