My wife loves Spanish Guitar, but we know little about musicians in this genre. I'd like to add some of this music to our collection and learn more about the music itself. Does anyone have recommendations for good quality Spanish Guitar recordings and/or artists?
As to Segovia consider the EMI label 'Great Recordings of the Century' series; 'Andres Segovia - 1927-1939 Recordings, volumes 1 and 2'. Segovia is, of course, largely credited with the modern establishment of the guitar as a legitimate classical concert instrument. Lots of the Spanish guitar standards in this set.
A recent issue that any Spanish/Latin American guitar fans may find worthwhile; David Russel, 'Aire Latino'on Telarc. Nice selection of Latin American music, beautifully played and recorded.
An absolutely killer classical guitar album is the Assad brothers (Sergio & Odair) playing Rameau, Scarlatti, Couperain, and Bach. It's Nonesuch 79292-2. Been in pretty steady rotation for me for 10 years.
