What is the best Pre-amp for a Mcintosh MC2300?

I just bought a MC2300 Amp. and am looking for a preamp. I would love to stay Mac. However, I am open to anything. I am on a budget. The price range is around $500. I have also heard people say that for the solid state amps like mine I should go tube on the preamp. Any thoughts?
