Best way to route signal from laptop to integrated amplifier
You will need to know the input sensitivity of your pre amplifier. If it is too sensitive for modern digital sources (which is often the case), you get clipping of the amplifier input circuitry, and that sounds really nasty. A telltale sign would be if you do not have to open the volume control on your amplifier very far to get a loud sound. See here: http://www.harbeth.co.uk/usergroup/forum/the-science-of-audio/amplifier-matching-mismatching-and-cli... If this is the case, it is wise to reduce the output level of your DAC somewhat using the volume control on your laptop. Modern DACs have enough internal bit depth for this. If the mismatch is too great, it may be better to use inline attenuators. |
