Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

Today's Listen: Kenny Burrell -- FOR CHARLIE AND BENNY Notes: Christian was the first guitarist to play anything but rhythm. He made his entry into the Jazz world via a small Benny Goodman combo, and later played in bands led by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie. Tracks 1-8 were originally issued as "A Generation Ago Today" which has the silliest Jazz art cover in history. All tunes played by the Goodman band and most originally featured Charlie Christian. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMk7csqGjYE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uf0m_0UXyk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FQF_pccXQU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ambZd4kIF8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BBMadsCalE Players always take a big chance by having Phil Woods on their album. He has been known to steal the show. Cheers |
A recent discussion on Vinyl Asylum brought out a few fans of Anita O'Day, including YT. While searching for a new post of her classic Newport Jazz Festival performance (original I had was deleted) I discovered this "All The Best" album. So I offer that here for fans among you all -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKg9dHt-kgA |
Today's Listen: Jon Hendricks -- A GOOD GIT-TOGETHER with Julian and Nate Adderley and Wes Montgomery and his brothers. Not my favorite Hendricks album, but he has some big-time guys backing him. written for Louis Jordan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG8LKfJNj6c music by Benny Golson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3xRywfLFAo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb7mG8gSC-E https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgp_Un0QU18 music by Randy Weston https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKUjS1leaqk Cheers |
