Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

I can assure you, you will not hear Ella or Sarah or Billie or Dee Dee in anyone's voice.   As hard as they may try.

Weren’t you the one who expressed dislike for Mose Allison a year or more ago? If so, considering his origins, how does that mesh?

I am not sure, but I don’t dislike Allison. I have paid real money for his CDs. He was OK back in the days of protest, when there was actually real things to protest. I have him on the shelf next to Dylan, Baez and Saint Marie.

Not my goto guy for Jazz. However, Mississippi punches way above it’s weight when it comes to producing musicians. In all genres.

What level of life experience she has? None, I guess. But she still can sing. How come? I feel honesty in her voice. Not many women - singer to be, I dare to say, have kept her original voices during their process of aging. You hear a lot of pretending. If I were a voice teacher, the first lesson would be finding your voice. It’s harder than it sounds.

In my entire life I never wanted to sing. Ok, maybe when I was five. I bored everyone ’cause I were singing in the shops, buses, on the streets, everywhere. But later went to choir just to get away a bit from home. I think that singing is the job for somebody else. Singing is hard. Playing even harder.

Dancing is another story. That’s easy. Even if it lasts 5 hours it is still easy.
