I'm an old man who has been listening to jazz for all of his life; that's a long time and a lot of jazz. I've never liked big bands very much, and when jazz sounds too much like "jazz" I can live without it. By that I mean it sounds too much like music that I've heard many many times before; the same old riffs. Any music that I like has to stand repeated listens. Unfortunately, I have some kind of time cutoff, meaning that at some point in time, new jazz began to sound redundant, or I just do not like it. I spent a lot of money on "new jazz" before I discovered this, and discovered at the same time that money was a waste because those records could be used as frisbees. Of course there are exceptions to my disdain for the big band, and Gerry Mulligan is one of them; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2nbtYg8YGA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0oh_8AE1eA |
pj, thanks for all the info on Hiromi. I have no idea where I'm going to find the time to listen to all the new music I'm finding having joined this forum. Once piece I watched last night but didn't post was a duet with Chick Corea. Chick, being the master and gentleman he is, gave Hiromi plenty or room to do what she does: having a blast letting her virtuosity, talent and joy pour forth no matter what style she's playing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KmBV1j5UMI Reminds me of something Frogman said about Oscar Peterson a while back: he always looks like he's having fun when he's playing. |
The music I like best, is beautiful music which relates to the human existence; the age old "Human existence"; "Delilah" for example, that's a story that tells of sex, love and betrayal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtnpVK1sFvA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkFSM9Frx3w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt_fmhtePoc |
