Way above my pay grade, Sound waves no longer transverse or perpendicular?

Interesting, thought provoking (for some) paper on sound waves and the new wave of sound.

Key quote from the article: we demonstrated for the first time that it can be a transverse wave under certain conditions. Allow me to translate: "We did some crazy esoteric experiments no one will find useful for 20 years (if even then), but it was unexpected and we spent a ton of money so cut us some slack, okay?"

So it could be an interesting basis for future research or possibly not. Finding that behavior in nature would have been an amazing discovery but it's still very clever.
