If you use Roon, it does the first MQA unfold, I recall, so you'd get get benefit even if your DAC doesn't decode MQA.
Pontus ii and Hi Res
A bit new to streaming so apologies for a naive question. I’m streaming Tidal from a Bluesound Node into a new Denafrips Pontus ii via optical cable. Regardless of resolution (hi res or MQA), the DAC stays on 44.1 kHz x 1 multiplier. I tried setting the streamer audio to “MQA to external DAC”, but no difference. Also no difference toggling between OS and NOS
What am I missing? If the Pontus can’t unfold MQA or resolve anything above 44.1 (x1) is there any reason to keep Tidal’s highest res service? The DAC should certainly recognize higher res files...no?
Appreciate any ideas.

@marco1 … monthly rate is $19.95. I purposely signed up for the highest SQ they offer. @bkeske Does your Aries2 indicate the resolution being played? My concern is the Pontus seems to recognize everything as 44.1 x1. Hi res or not. We have a family Spotify account and honestly, I’m not sure I’m hearing much/any difference with Tidal (normal, Hi-fi or MQA). Or, is my DAC not working correctly? |
Yes it does, when playing hi res files from my server it indicates that higer resolution, including DSD. But it always shows redbook rates using the Tidal HiFi plan, not the HiFi+ with MQA, which you are using. You will only see 44.1 when using Tidal with the Denifrips. Which still sounds very good. Heck, I still spin many CD’s using the Denifrips via an Audiolab 6000CDT transport, and it sounds fantastic. If I were you, I would reduce your plan to HiFi. Or if MQA is important to you, get another DAC, use the internal Node DAC and bypass the Pontus, or consider Qobuz or Roon. Some day I may take the Roon leap, but as I listen to primarily vinyl, don’t feel it is necessary, for me at this time. An interesting discussion for you: Go to a comment on Sept. 21th, and this discussion is had. As I understand, Roon will unpack MQA and convert it to Hi Res PCM which the Denafrips will utilize.

Not sure what Redbook Rates means but I’ll assume it’s higher than 44.1 x1. As such are you suggesting that the Pontus will recognize hi res from Tidal Hifi, but NOT with Hifi+ with MQA? If so, I’ll certainly step down to Hifi only. |
